Top Link / Rocker question

So I bought this 8n for our property. This is my first ford tractor, so I am sure that I missed a few things when buying it. I've spent about 6 months getting the engine to run smooth and start reliably.

I've just put the tractor in the main garage for winter maintenance. I noticed that there appears to be a missing pin on the bottom of the rocker. I found another thread on this site that explained the pin should be 9 7/8in. long. So am I missing this pin? Also, should the left ear be larger than the right ear? (on the top of the diff)

You don't really need the long pin, I have two 8ns and they both only have a short pin, but your's appears to be missing that one.

I don't think I could get mine out if I tried! My FO-4 only shows the short pin.

Also you should only use the top holes in the link if you are using a ground engaging implement, should as a plow. I had to grind down my aftermarket top links to fit in the bottom holes.

Did I say I hate photos turned on their side!! had to download it to view it right.
 
My 740 actually says on the link what implement to use in which hole. I guess is too many users ripped the guts out of the top cover on the N's so Henry figured he best give written instructions on the 100 series!

Thank you all for the quick replies. I'm glad that I joined and asked before I started using the 8N for heavy work this spring. So far, I have only used a back blade to help level the driveway/ trail to my back shop. I'll change the top link to the lowest hole.

Am I OK with just using a standard pin to fit that last hole? I'd have to measure the length, but I'm sure that I have a few extra 3/4 inch pins in the barn.

I apologize for the sideways pic. When I sent it to my email, it was right side up. I'll double check before I post a pic again.

Good afternoon: You can view a picture the way it was made by right-clicking on the picture, then click on "open image in new tab"; then left click on the new tab. If all goes well, you will see the picture as it was made, hopefully right side up. Also, you can make it enlarge by clicking, I forget if right or left, but you can experiment a little on your own.

Technically yes, a long pin goes through all but honestly, i would just grab one of the longer "off the shelf" top link pins and run it through the tabs of the rocker and the center lug and call it good for now. you can always be on the lookout for a longer pin and switch them out later. I have seen many this way. dont imagine it'd be a problem.

Those ears on the differntial are for mounting a rear mount manure loader and the booster cylinders that go with it. Makes things a lot stronger for that. For normal use a short pin is fine, but the long one is hinged in the middle to make it so you can get it out without taking the left fender off. That pin is supposed to only go in in one direction only. There might be other implements that require those ears as well but cannot thing of any now.

I have a long pin that does not bend in the middle. I don't have to take the fender off to take it out or put it in. If I understand correctly, the hinged pin is a Ferguson part.
 

I copied it and then renamed and saved it on my computer.
I then rotated it the correct direction and then reposted the picture. Just trying to help out some.
I do a lot of reading on here but I do not know a lot about these tractors even though I own one. I have not had a lot of problems with it.

For me the key is to make sure you save it again in the correct orientation. Other wise I do not know.
 
I know the Ferguson TO30 used the hinged pin and the space betweek the parts and the fender on the Ford is same measurements so don't see how a non hinged pin could work. If I remember the NAA had the hinged pin as well as the TO30, Had both, just a few uears apart.And the pictures are showing for the top of the rocker with the top link attached. That is not the same as for the bottom pin that attaches the rocker to differential housing on tractors with the differential ears. But if you do not need those ears to use the loader then the same oin that fastens the top link on will also fasten the rocker to differential.
 
My 8N seems stock, but it's possible that something was tweaked over the years. The long pin just makes it.
