Carb orifice questions

Having difficulty with rebuild of my M-S carb. I "assume" it's original(?) to my '52 8N. It is a "B" type carb and has a brass tag permanently attached to the lower bowl that is deeply stamped "649" but I don't see any reference to that number as being applicable for various available rebuild kits. There is also what appears to be a lightly etched marking that may be 23 or 33, the lower part of the first digit is no longer visible. I've fully (I thought) stripped and thoroughly cleaned the carb only to discover one last orifice in the bottom of the bowl that was not visible prior to cleaning. It is located where the tip of the Power Adjusting Needle would engage it. It does not appear to have screw driver slots in it. My questions are: Does anyone have an idea what the "649" indicates? and Is this orifice removable/replaceable since the 2 kits I have don't appear to include anything that appears to be this orifice? Thanks

The orifice you refer to is not replaceable.

Best info I have found for <a href="http://myfordtractors.com/carbrebuild.shtml#jetsizes">jet sizes</a>.

If the carb has the Marvel Schebler cast into the fuel bowl it is probably a TSX33.

I believe the 649 is a date code.

Looking at " Smiths Old Ford Tractors"
Under TRACTOR ID/ HISTORY
1950
"The TSX 33 that had been used for
several years, changed at 260596,
To TSX 241."

The pictures show a TSX33, with a wire
size .062 into the hole, and I think
bottoming out in the passage below. The
opening is larger than the largest wire
in my set, so bigger than .062.
Used the small wire with the z bend to
find the bottom, to verify.

What are the dificulties you are having?

M/S used a brass ID mfg date code tag when they built the carb. It had the model number as well. "33" indicates model TSX-33; "6-49" (I see a '1'?)designates built in June 1949 so means not a lot; unimportant. "...It is a "B" type carb..." -where is that on your carb? Only the TSX-241 brass ID tag would have a "B" suffix. Any other numbers and/or characters as cast recessed are M/S manufacturing codes and mean nothing. Where are you getting your rebuild kits at? Get the TISCO kit, p/n C546V, as they do list models used on. Want me to rebuild it or exchange for a professionally rebuilt TSX-241-B? I do guaranteed professional work; NOT just a repaint and adding a few new parts. Email open.

It would seem that my '52 8N with a high-ish serial number has a TSX 33 B carb which was built in June of '49 rather than a TSX 241 that most likely was originally on it, correct?

Well, there was no TSX-33B. Only the TSX-33 and the TSX-38. The TSX-38 is a TSX-33 with a different choke lever, double ended so the choke could be operated from the front of the tractor when cranking by hand. The TSX-38 was used on war time 2N tractors and industrial applications.

Your 52 may have had a TSX-241B, or possibly a TSX-241C originally. The TSX-241C is not mentioned on the history page "<a href="https://fordtractorcollectors.com/identify-my-tractor/tractor-id-history/">Smith's Old Ford Tractors</a>".

All versions used on the N series; TSX-33, TSX-38, TSX-241, TSX-241A, TSX-241B, and TSX-241C were superseded by the TSX-241B at some point and should be rebuilt to the 241B specifications. All models are interchangeable.

I have a friend with a 48 8N that has had the block rebored for the 0.090 sleeves. Whoever did the job was conscientious enough to overstamp the &#9734;s with &#8900;s on the serial number. If you have a "B" stamped on the ID tag on you carb perhaps someone had upgraded it to 241B specs and added the "B" to indicate that. You never know:)
