CLUTCH HELP PLEASE

The clutch will not release on either this 9n or 2n or whatever it is. You can start it in gear and the tractor will move but you can't push the clutch in to stop it. Disconnected the rod that goes to the clutch arm but can only move the arm a little.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Ray

This is a common problem on these old tractors. It's caused by rust or other contamination that causes the clutch disk to stick to the clutch and not allow it to release. Sometimes it can be broken loose by pull starting the tractor in gear and while holding the clutch pedal down and holding the right side brake down at the same it might brake loose. But it can be dangerous, so think ahead and be careful. The problem is, that the clutch might just stick again. If you can get it freed up, then block the clutch pedal down with a block of wood or a heavy weight when you park the tractor. Eventually you will have to do what Rustred said, and split the tractor and put in a new clutch.

If the tractor needs to be split how difficult is that? I am guessing that it would probably be more than I would care to tackle.
Thanks for your help.

i've never split mine, but the consensus here is that it's not that hard. a paved surface to do it on is a plus.

Are you saying the clutch pedal will not
push down the normal amount? Like to the
running board if it has one?
Or is the pedal pushing down the normal
amount, and not disengaging?

It's not a particularly hard job on a small tractor like this, and we can help you through it. A couple of jack stands, 4x4 timbers for cribbing, and a solid surface to work on. If you get the I&T FO4 manual, your job will be easier. That manual can be ordered from this site.

Before I got too excited about splitting it, which is not that hard, I would drive it around for some time hitting the brakes while the clutch pedal is pushed down. When I got my first N, it would stick from time to time. I think it had been sitting a lot. Has not stuck now in 10 years or so. sit may take some time, don't get impatience, get the tractor good and warmed up, time is your buddy!

The clutch pedal will go down some. We disconnected the rod that goes to the clutch arm and the clutch arm moves very little.

If the clutch pedal will not go down past the free travel amount, then it sounds like a spit is in order. When mine had a stuck clutch the clutch pedal would go down the normal amount.

On my 8n, the clutch arm lifts up/
rotates the amount shown in the picture.
The pedal is all the way down, touching
the running board. Believe a 2n or 9n
may look different, but the clutch shaft
would move/ rotate, a similar amount.

This site sells clutch kits for $95.88

The fo4 manual has all the info to
split.

Lots of threads/ opinions, and
preferences, on this forum.

Would probebly need to be winched on a
trailer, to deliver to repair shop.
