What are the deer thinking

Why would they choose to walk up and over a compost pile about 6 feet high when they could walk around, it doesn't look like they poked around on it, I do put vegy peelings and such in it but they didn't seem to look for anything. there were some peelings that I threw out yesterday but they mostly left them alone and those were down near the ground not up top. They do like to walk in the tractor tire tracks. I also noticed besides the 4 sets of tracks by the compost pile there was one more about 50 feet away and running parallel to the others, probably a Buck.

It is further for them to walk around, they have no trouble going over!

i used to have an isolated ten foot stretch of fence. they'd jump over it more often than go around it.

Around here "grain bags" are common and the *%#^ deer play "leapfrog" over them, puncturing them with their hooves which lets rain leak in.

The deer won't touch your scrap vegetable peelings, maybe carrots. If you have a natural food source like acorns, they will eat those first -it's like ice cream and cake to them. They will do what they want, go wherever they want and not always travel in the least path of resistance. Wild animals aren't as stupid as some people think. You ever notice that 99.8% of road kill is all dos and fewans? You hardly ever see a buck.
