What is the purpose

Below are pictures of what I found after de-greasing the 51 8N. Looks like a drilled hole plugged with the tip of a walking cane.
Inspection port for sticking clutch? Mouse Motel? Any ideas as to why someone would do this? Cant find any answers in the manuals or parts
catalog.

That is ahole thaat was drilled to install a Sherman gear box, some one must have removed at some time in the past.

Just googled pictures of a Sherman transmission. That is
pretty cool. I kind of feel cheated like I just found out
I was robbed. I will have to get creative and figure out
a good permanent way to plug!

Should be able the find the Sherman shift lever pretty cheap. Have someone machine a little bushing for you and some epoxy....no one will know your machine does not have Sherman.

I have a couple of those plugs after installing Sherman's. One of those plugs and some JB Weld and you can make it appear as no one was ever there.

Here's a chrome plug i picked up at lowes hardware store in the specialty nuts and bolts section for my NAA for the sherman combo hole. It was painted to match the rest of the tractor. Tractor is used in low range for pulling so don't need handle for other ranges. Help keep the critters out.

I concur - for the Sherman Combo Shifter handle. Is the unit still intact? New handles are made by Red Rock Mfg; Pella, IA and sold at Dennis Carpenter and nnalert as well. OEM were cast steel, new repops are aluminum. The Sherman Aux Transmissions are an added bonus gives you more speed ranges. Maybe PO pulled it out but as Dan said, used units are always popping up on ebay. BTW, it looks like you have a fairly new wire harness, OEM cloth covered style, but best to run it behind the drag link not over it.
