8N Running engine shuts down when transmission engaged

My 8N has run great for 15 years since last tuned up. But now runs great when in neutral but shuts down when I engage the transmission...any recommendations where to start troubleshooting?

Not a lot to go on George.
Are you saying if put it in gear and try
to let out the clutch it kills?
What part of the country are you in?
Cold country where water in the
transmission could have froze and locked
up the gears? Does the shifter feel the
same as normal or is it hard to shift
like maybe the tranny is locked in two
gears? Have you pulled the top cover and
looked inside to see if anything is
wrong? Give us more info. The expertise
is here to help you if you tell us more.

A Neighbor had the same scenario with a Ford "N"...

Sooooooooo he revered the little beast up full throttle...Popped the clutch several times....water had frozen in Tranny....BIG BANG...engine kept running nicely ....there were Brocken components in Transmission.........Water FROZEN..........

Frozen water in the rear end would be the most likely problem. I would bring it into a heated shop and drain the rear end. It'll probably take a couple of days to fully warm up the frame enough to melt any ice.

I occasionally have issues with ice in the hydraulics of my equipment and I deal with that using a forced air construction heater. Set it a couple feet away and even outside it will have the housing toasty in a matter of minutes....

George, does it stall when you release the clutch in neutral, too? What about with the PTO engaged in neutral? In a specific gear? Did you let the
tractor warm up a few minutes? Is the tractor parked outdoors? Has it been below freezing? When was the last time the
transmission/hydraulic/differential fluid was changed? Do the hydraulics work right now if you try them? Does the shifter move freely and normally? is
the engine functioning normally in neutral, or does it sound or smell wrong?

As mentioned if you are in an area with freezing weather this
time of the year you may have water in your transmission that
has frozen. DO Not try to move the tractor under its own
power. Tow it into a warm place, try using a heater on the
transmission or wait for a good warm stretch then try draining
fluid. If you want to check for ice now just slowly removing the
drain plug will do it, water and ice will be at bottom of the
transmission case and if much ice is present it will block
anything from draining till melted.
