Took an EI off a '39 front dizzy. 12 volt conversion, 12 volt coil. Might be pertronix but could be another brand don't know. Always deal with points. Any way to tell if it's
good once off the tractor?
 

Install it in a spare distributor... I spec you could also wire it up on the table and trigger it with the trigger wheel are a magnet, I would add a ground to the dist plate are if you install it in a spare on the test bench ground the dist body.

In other words makeshift a home for it just link it was mounted to the tractor. I have a contact set and condenser screwed to a 2X4 for playing around... The condenser has to also be grounded :wink:

Think of it as a set of points the module pulls the coil to ground just like points other than it pulls it to 1/2 a volt shy of ground...

Easiest way to see if it is any good to sell it to somebody else. If its bad, theyll let you know!

Turn out to be a carb issue. Slapped idizzy back on got spark switched carb and it started up.All good. Thanks for the replies.

Just old people :roll:

Over on the old british car forums you get an interesting range of opinions. Everything from the points forever guys to people converting the cars to full blown EFI with a custom programmed ECU.

In my case, it's fear of the KNOWN, have seen several random failures over the years, and just when the equipment or truck is needed the most, it seems.

I've always avoided electronic ignition for offroad vehicles, from Honda Trail 90s to jeeps to buggies to ATVs to . . .

Funny how many times over the years that guys have left camp with their SuperWhizzyZapMaster ultra-performance (with integrated stereo, blinky lights and gen-u-ine endorsement signature from the 80-time winner of the Baja 500) ignitions kicking sand in my face, but came back to camp at the end of my 16-foot tow strap . . .the lucky ones came back THAT DAY.

Electronic ignition makes sense for street cars -- but for a tractor? Why bother? It is REALLY that important to get that extra 0.3 HP out of an engine that was rated to half the horsepower of a Volkswagen when it was made (back before you were born)? Is it REALLY that difficult to set and time the points?

Jeez - why so much angst over what people prefer? EI on a tractor is nothing more than a transistorized version of mechanical contact breaker points. Sort of like a preference for LED vs incandescent lamps....
