First workout

Yesterday was my first real workout with my 8N, probably very mild compared to some, but for me it was a workout. First snow of the season, about 5-6 inches. The ground wasn't frozen yet and the snow was super wet, weighed a ton. Did not have a lot of length to go but had to get a running start, no chains cement drive way, chains would make a mess of the cement. So it was back and forth, a few feet at a time, plow this way, plow that way, hydraulics were cold and a little sluggish, but everything worked good, don't remember how long I was out there, but we were both soaking wet when we were finished. Was worried that this old thing would have some issues but not a one, never skipped a beat. The left and right brakes came in handy a couple times, I was a shifting fool, Doesn't sound like much but that my story

Sounds like a good day to me. My '51 8N and Sherman combo with a back blade and a Wagner loader is all that I had for years (late 50's to about 2015. Main driveway was 400' and 125' driveway to the barn. Loaded tires but no chains. No cab or Heathouser.
Now, I sit in the livingroom and watch a hired snowplow truck. A knowledgeable driver can plow me out in less than a half hour. Warms the heart among other things.

If the hydraulics were sluggish with the weather warm enough for the snow to be wet, you might consider replacing the hydraulic fluid with the modern version (UTF). 'Course, now that I've said that, let the argument begin!

I thought I was going to get my first workout last night but we only got an inch before it turned to freezing rain. We got another inch today but not really enough for me to bother yet. The 9N is all gassed up and ready to go for the next one though.

I agree about the UTF too, my hydraulics are never sluggish in the cold even when the temps get below 0.

15 minutes idling with the PTO lever engaged works for me using the ?thick stuff.? Definitely would want to give it a longer warmup time next time before
plowing.

However, I?m somewhere with warmer summers and my 8N was leaking whatever UTF ?blend? the PO used (probably a bit of UTF and a bit of
something else) everywhere when it got some hard summer work on a hot day, whereas it doesn?t drip the original thick mineral oil stuff all over the
yard. YMMV, no argument here, the UTF was a lot better the cold. ;)
