9N sherman upgrade?

I seem to attract the odd repairs.. here is another one. I had a 9n (late model last year built) dropped off that is in need of some serious attention.. the owner starts asking about upgrading it with a sherman box. He says he has a line on an 8n donor with a good sherman but bad main trans

On the farm we have an NAA and 841 both with the 3 speed sherman. I use them occasionally, usually when moving field to field. (oh ya that 841 in OD and 4th will scoot down the road almost to the point of being scary)

I guess my question should be. Do you guys use your shermans?

Is it worth the time and headaches to swap one in??? also what will fit and what wont..

Thanks

I have a 41 9N and a 44 2N both with the Sherman over only. Back when it was being used regulary that Sherman was like putting a missing 3rd gear in for a lot of field work, Gave a speed simulat to the 3rd in the NAA or 841 where second was too slow for like raking hay but high was too fast. But we did a lot of road travel as well using third with overdrive. Pulled lots of loads to elevator using that sherman over in third gear. I gust wish they were the over-under units but were not yet made when Dad had it installed in the 2N and I bough the 9N with it already installed. I had a NAA and a Ferguson TO-30 without the sherman and wished they had them.

Seems I heard the early transmissions used a straight cut input gear, the later ones wer3e bevel cut... the Sherman has to have the proper cut gear...

" He says he has a line on an 8n donor with a good sherman but bad main trans"

Better tell him to inspect the outshaft carefully into the main trans cause once the teeth start breaking on the gears the pieces get catch up in other gears.
Installing a sherman in a '41 9n will require the mating gear in the main trans to be replaced with the later 2n heical gear. I know they said that there was a sherman with a straight cut output shaft but in 30 years of putting shermans in I ain't never seen one so it's likely you won't find one. The 8n model had helical gears anyway. Have several shermans in farm and pullin tractors use them all the time.

Had a good 51 8N worker with combo for over 30 years. Used UD nearly all of the time, direct sometimes, and OD rarely.

Still have an exceptional 52 8N with combo. It serves as my quad and combo is used every time it comes out of the barn.

Made sense to run the 8n at lower RPM while digging to save gas. Pictured is page one section 2 Operating Instructions of the Sherman 54B manual.
