Ford 8n making loud noise

Hi just was looking for some advice, ive recently been working on my father in laws ford 8n and I was playing with it today it all of a sudden made a loud banging/hammering sound from the flywheel area. I never heard it do this before and dont want to continue turning it over due to how loud it was. Any suggestions on what to do or look for first?

Just a guess here but if you are pretty certain the noise is coming from the bell housing area I've read many times about how the parts from the bendix starter drive can come off and drop down into the bottom of the bell housing. Normally the parts don't bother anything in there but you may have an odd one that the flywheel or clutch is hitting one.
About the only way you can fix it or even be sure that's the problem is to split the tractor which is not a hard job to do.

Dreich,Your starter drive could have teeth missing ect.causing your noise when cranking it over.Remove the starter for a look see.Put a 5/16 nc nut on one of the long bolts to hold the starter together when taking it off.
