Guys, come on! Where's your American ingenuity? It occurred to me that Ford must have used a lot of car and truck engine parts in the tractors. There are several vendors online like Mac's, Eckler's, C & G, etc, selling early Ford vehicle parts, many of which cross to N tractor part numbers. I got all my '48 8N cylinder head studs and nuts from Mac's. I bought studs in two, maybe three, different lengths to accommodate alternator brackets and wiring conduit, along with the regular head studs. Mac's PN 32-12038-1 crosses to 18-6066 and is 2.78 in long @ $3.99 ea; PN 47-14880-1 crosses to 40-6066 and is 2.90 in long @ $2.49 ea; PN 32-15389-1 crosses to 48-6067 and is 3.09 in long @ 3.99 ea; PN 47-20152-1 crosses to 91A-6067 and is 3.15 in long @ 8.99 ea (ouch!); cad plated nut PN 47-28376-2 crosses to B6064 @ $.30 ea. Check carefully to see what stud length(s) you need; some aftermarket heads are thicker, some heads have been shaved, composition gaskets are thicker than metal shim type, etc. You want at least 1 1/2 threads through the nut and you can't have all the threads above the head surface. Mac's search engine is hard to use for these parts. They want you to specify vehicle and year model along with the part number. Just google the Mac's PNs above and you can get to each individual item on their site. Or just call them.

If I had the time I would make them I had material to make them (for myself not to sale) that was my plan but used the material on another project and brought what I needed from J-8ns.. Myself I would put bolts in it and move on with life... Sounds like a project for TOH...

Howdy Mister Douglas-
I replied with sources on the 'other site'. Get studs from SUMMIT RACING and hex nuts at McMaster-Carr. Everyone seems to be going with head bolts these days. Here's a 7/16-14 x 7/16-20 x 3.00 stud, Grade 8, from SUMMIT RACING. It was the first place I looked so there may be others. Note length is 3". OEM specifies 3 at 2.9" and 15 at 2.78" so if you must, grind off the 7/16-20 end that accepts the hex nut. Use an old one to compare with. Torque is different for nuts and bolts. The UNC (coarse) end, 7/16-14 always goes into cast iron. The UNF (fine) end, 7/16-20 accepts the hex nut. Hope this helps you.

Keep in mind that studs are double ended fasteners and overall length is only half the story. You also need to know the grip length:

grip length = length of the shoulder plus the length of the top thread

OR

grip length = over all length - length of base end thread.

Here is a "short" OEM stud taken out of a 1941 block - grip length is 2". I didn't remove a longer one but I think it is safe to assume the base thread length is the same and I measured the grip length at 2.4". Dorman 675-11 is 3.25 OAL and is a good match for the longer studs with a grip length of 2.50. Dorman 675-108 will work for the shorter ones but the grip length is a little long at 2.25". Both of those Dorman part numbers are sold in boxes of 10 for about $20/box = $60 for a full set. A full set of cap screws can be purchased for $25 or less.....

If'n ya need them now, check the local stores first. Be prepared for sticker shock especial at places like TEE-ESS_CEE and Fasternal. I recently bought some 5/16 studs for the TSX carburetors at a local auto parts store two for $8! I ordered 10 for $5 at SUMMIT.

Ed, I recently put a high performance engine together, not that an N motor is anywhere near high performance, and I converted to studs for many reasons that I read and heard about. I had my Ford F-350 in the shop for major work and the shop owner showed me Arps studs and how they compare to OEM. The difference was incredible. Everyone seems to be going with studs.
