2n engine will move only 2

I replaced the ring gear, clutch (turned the right direction), pressure plate, release bearing, and trans seal. When I got the engine back in the starter would not turn it over. I pulled the starter and it worker fine, put it back in and no go, pulled the plugs and no go, used a long screw driver in crank nut and got it to move. Tried the starter again and it moved it about 2" and stopped. I backed the engine up and it stopped turning after about 2". I guess I will pull it back apart and see what is stopping the engine. The only thing I can think of is the ring gear is hitting the starter. Anybody ever run into this before.

That happened to me when I put my 901 together. One cylinder was full of mouse bait. It had sat for two days with the manifold on but no carb or muffler.

Did it run prior to all that? Did you follow the FO-4 manual on R&R'g? Is it 6V or 12V? Do you have the correct starter? 9N & 2N models used a 1-Wire starter motor and NO Solenoid. If starter motor tests and motors fine static, if when mounted the issues begin, you have done something wrong either electrically or mechanically.

You probably need to split it again, but it would be interesting so loosen all the engine to clutch housing bolts and pry the engine forward a half inch and see if that changed anything. Let us know.

9N, 2N and 8N all use the same starter.

It ran not to long ago, I have used the tractor for years it needed the clutch changed, hood, front axel rebuild and a few other things. this hanging up engine has me puzzled. Trans is out of gear. I did not spot weld the ring gear. I changed the crank to flywheel bolts, and the pressure plate bolts with the same length bolts. As soon as I can I am going to try to look in the plug hole and see if I can see anything. If nothing I will split again and see what the problem is. I will update as soon as I figure it out. It was free and smooth before now this. One step forward three back.

In your list of things you worked on.....I see you had the front axle
to fix.
At any point did you remove the Gov. while working up front.???
If so.....you may have put the Gov. holding bolts in wrong. the top bolt may be binding up on/in the cam gear.!!!
Top bolt should be the longer of the two bolts.!!! IF I REMEMBER RIGHT!!????
Don't force it, trying to start the engine!!!! That would tend to strip some teeth off of the cam gear, and mess up the timing gear also!!

Just a thought!!!

Got to thinking about the two GOV. bolts I mentioned above. I told you wrong in my last post!!!!

That should read:.........The short bolt goes in the top hole, and the longer bolt goes in the bottom hole!!!

Sorry 'bout that'!!!

Getting to old to remember things......Got to look things up these days!!!!
