exhaust pipe fitup

Ok I have turned the clamp every way you can, inverted it and changed it every way I can and the exhaust pipe is still loose on the manifold. I know all about one side of the clamp going to the manifold and one side to the pipe but it is still a loose sloppy fit. Everything is new so before I braze a short section of exhaust pipe to the manifold does anyone have any suggestions

I ground a bit off on one side of the clamp to make it tighter. If not enough grind both sides.

I cut out a section of copper sheet and formed it to cover the mating surfaces preventing blowout. Worked great.

The muffler pipe clamp goes on way correct way -the LARGE SIDE GOES DOWN -see Tip #8, 75 Tips, Bruce(VA). When assembling a new pipe or manifold or both, check the fit of both without the clamp to see how square to the world they are. todays' manifolds are not made like the OEM ones were. The flange to pipe is smaller and often connections are not leak-proof. Some try aluminum foil, pieces of empty beer cans, and other band-aid fixes. the camps ate not the same either. They seem to bottom out to each other before completely tight. I remedy that by sanding/grinding some material off each end so they fit snugly together. Finally, once the setup is on and used for a bit, they will conform to each other and settle down. Most, if not all leaking will stop eventually.

Posted it on the net years ago and it still bounces back from time to time. Best way is to hang the pipe, place a jack on the floor under the pipe near the bend as possible and jack the pipe up for a tight contact to the manifold. Then with a 3/4# ball peen hammer shape the pipe to exactly and tightly fit the manifold takes about one minute. Install the clamp the way it fits best, first using one half at a time that will allow you to get a good visual. Reason for this clamp trial is that most clamps and manifolds are aftermarket and vary a good bit, you must obtain the best fit possible for your parts. No sealer, no gasket it will work best this way

I use a floor-jack to hold up the pipe in-place and I fold some aluminum foil about a half inch wide
and wrap the foil around the pipe and then clamp the pipe tight. Works for me.
