54 NAA 12V conversion

Let me first start off by saying I am relatively new to working on tractors. I installed the conversion kit according to the diagram and it turns over without the key in the ignition. I have tried a few different things and nothing seems to work. Does anyone have experience with the conversion kit or have seen this issue before? Appreciate any help.

Those models never required the ign key to be present or ON in order for starter to operate.

Thanks for the info, I would not have guessed that. I have a couple questions... Could I remove the key ignition entirely or does it have a use in this application? How would you recommend I shut the tractor down? Thanks

You said it all in your question. KEY Ignition. You need to turn the key on to get spark so that the engine will run, turn the key off and the engine shuts down. pretty simple really. The starter and ignition circuits are two different circuits and both are needed.

Thanks. I guess I was just confused by it turning over without the key in it and didn't think about that. Thanks for the education.

I think you have it wired correctly. all the key is to put power to your ignition or stop power to your ignition. some people will wire up the starter through the switch which really is the way it should have ben made that way first time. I bought an naa that I still have and the fellow put a device on the battery cable to shut if off when the tractor wasn't being used. apparently his grand kids liked to try to start it and kept running his battery down. really wasn't a bad idea. good thing is ford made sure the tractor was in neutral before you could crank it.

Another question for those who can help. Does the external resistor need to be in the line going to the coil? I ask because the original 12v conversion did not have one. I changed it out because the wiring was spliced in so many places and I found a couple wires just hanging loose from the voltage regulator. The conversion kit came with a one wire alternator that does not need an external voltage regulator. I am getting fuel but the spark may be the issue, I need to test it. Thanks in advance for help and recommendations.

Thanks to those that helped me out with 12v conversion issues. I got it figured out and running. I just need to check the points and or carb adjustments to have it running a bit better. Thanks again! :D
