Tune up question

Question for Dr. Bruce Haynes...and others...
know this would vary with type of useage..RPM over time etc...but how long a time do you get after a good tune up...how many hours ya think?

I usually get several years but it doesn't get run every week any more so it would be hard to say how many hours. Before I got the 1710 Mr. Ed the 48 8n was the main work horse pulling logs, plowing snow,raking the driveway,and yard cleanup with the carryall. It was used pretty much weekly back then and it went several years as I recall.

I've had my NAA for 22 years give or take, and have never changed points. If doesn't get run that often anymore. I think it's time for a tune up though as I notice it's taking a little longer to start than it used to.

I honestly can't tell you.

I do know the last time the 1951 sidemount wouldn't start (no spark) I dressed the glazed points and off I went.


Maybe a good comparison would be my 1929 Tudor. I put a rebuilt distributor and new points in it the summer of 2013. 13k miles and 6 years later, same set of points. I do lube the cam when I lube the rest of the car, all 34 grease fittings fittings. Car starts easily, runs 45-50 easily with no problems.

Yes they do. They have been a great source of debate here for years.

The last set of front mount points I used on my 1948 8N lasted a little over 6 years and only were changed because I decided it was time do a tune-up wanted to change to a set of ECHLIN points. I had been using the TISCO points with the plastic rubbing block so must have got a good set. FWIW: Farmer Dan and I spent a week in June rebuilding front mounts and tested numerous brands. ALL the new ECHIN sets were junk -wouldn't open to .015". The Standard Ignition sets were good but a few had fit issues. We didn't have new set of TISCO's to try. The best were the ones sold by CNH. They have the phenolic rubbing block and fit perfect with no issues. Price: $16. TISCO offers a handy .015" feeler gauge to set the gap with and a capsule of cam lube grease. ECHLIN came with a dab of cam lube grease as well. STND IGN can be bought on ebay -prices vary by seller from $11 to $36. They are also sold at SUMMIT RACING. Points are everything. EI eliminates them, yes, but one wrong short and you all the smoke out of them and have a bill well over $100. Fellas often can't figure out the OEM 6V/POS GRN electrical setup and assume an Electronic Ignition will fox all that. The same is true for switching over to 12V. If it doesn't run now on 6V what makes you think it will on 12 or EI? It is a fact that 99.98% of all non-starting issues are due to incorrect wiring regardless whether they if are 6V or 12V. As our old, late, curmudgeon Dell use to say, "...I know a few ways to change to 12 Volts and the reasons why, but have had no need to do so. My 6V/POS GRN system runs just fine".

The norm on a car in that time frame up till they came out with electronic ignition would have been 10K miles are less.. That would have been in a perfect world and our tractor don't live in a perfect world..

As ignition got better spark plugs were able to live in their environment longer so there is no debate about it... EI does take the advantage of mother nature out of the equation...

Points will age in the box that's why I store my stash of good ones in a ziplock bag and purge the air out of it...

This is one reason I hate a front mount dist. to just take a look at the points is a project... You have to get on your knees and pray to it I get rid of machines I have to pray too...

Also, the amount of time the tractor runs figures into the equation. Yeah, if you only fire it up on Christmas and Easter, it will last 25 years. It is recommended you at least dress the points and clean the distributor once year under normal usage, and not necessarily perform a complete tune-up. The old adage applies as well, "...If It Aint' Broke...". Preventative Maintenance (PM) is a good practice on any machine. Points wear/burn; they're an electrical device. Verify all wiring is inspected and clean, bright, and tight.

I've got a Samsung Android; picture is fine on that, but blurry on the laptop.

And the Photobucket watermark does not appear on the phone either, just the laptop.

i wouldn't know how to navigate the internet on my phone.

but i just looked at an old post with a pic posted by jesse - same thing. i have zero doubt at this point that it's photoshop's doing. notice how their logo is not blurry, just the pic. they likely have some bandwidth limit for hotlinked pics, and the scaled down mobile images are under the limit.

just for laughs, i clicked a pic to see it properly at their site. i was immediately presented with a page that was drowning in ads. while staring at it in disbelief, it turned into a full page beer ad.
