Been that way on my Samsung phone since the day I bought it. This site has no built in support for mobile devices and it's up to the phone what it wants to do with these big web pages.

Check the settings on your browser.
I can set mine to view page as a desktop site (which makes tiny fonts like you speak of) or as a mobile site which has much bigger fonts. Also, you should be able to switch on or off the auto/manual zoom on a page. Try switching your auto zoom off and see what that does.

That depends on a number of things.

The behavior of the Desktop option depends on the browser AND the site.

For Chrome on Android the Desktop option simply changes the User Agent string sent in the HTTP page request header. It does not change how Chrome scales the display. In mobile mode that UA string identifies a mobile device (e.g. contains the word Mobile in the description) versus a desktop device. This site doesn't have mobile support so it has no effect on the layout or font size returned by the server and the display on the phone is the same either way. On sites with mobile support the layout and/or size will change because the server changes it.

Zoom level is handled on the users device by the user agent (browser) when it displays the page content. The display is always scaled up or down by the zoom factor specified.

Well something changed and most likely on the phone.. Are you the only user of that phone? What phone and browser? If you didn't do it and you are the only user I'd guess you got an automatic OS or browser update that changed some setting or behavior.

I use Samsung Internet - on an LG phone.
Had it on a Samsung phone before and
liked it so downloaded the app.
I also have Chrome which I rarely use -
I distrust all thinga Google and Opera
which I use a bit.

I don't doubt your phone works like that. I specifically said it was OS/browser/server dependent and explained why. IMO understanding the how and why things work/don't work is important for users of phones as well as tractors Maybe more so for the smart phone users since there are a lot more of them and a plethora of websites.

There are things other than size and layout that depend on this behavior. For example one of the industrial supply companies I deal with has an online catalog application that you can launch from the web page for one of theri items. In desktop mode the catalog opens on the page containing the item I am looking at but I can navigate the full online catalog from there. I also get really tiny fonts  The mobile version has larger fonts but does not allow me to navigate to anything other than the page I launched. I can only guess but I suspect the catalog is a Java applet and in addition to the larger fonts the Javascript they download to mobile devices does not provide the full functionality of the desktop version. Whatever it is the behavior is clearly being dictated by the server not the phone which after all is the reason for the User Agent header.

i agree with your reasoning. yesterday or friday, i got a software update on my LG/Verizon phone.

i don't use it on the internet. it's just a flip phone - but the timing of this is interesting.
