Bought a locked up 8n

Found a locked up 8n today that had the correct front wheels and tires for my 850. Ended up being cheaper to buy the 8n that the wheels and tires i needed. Story on the tractor is that the engine was rebuilt and then it sit for 2 years because of PO health issues. Originally I was going to take what I wanted and sell it for scrap but it looks pretty nice. I put atf in the cylinders and am going to try and get it to turn over. Oil looks good so I don't think it's too bad. Is atf the best thing to free it up?

Seems odd that it would lock up
after 2 years? I have 3 N series
tractors that sat in a fence row
for 5+ years and none of them were
stuck. Could the starter be
stuck? Or was something like the
head and hood left off?

I don t know any history on it. Can the starter cause the engine to not turn over? I rolls fine so I know it s not stuck between gears.

338ftw, You might try putting it in 4th gear and try rocking it back and forth forward and backwards by pushing on the rear tires to roll the engine over.A good helper would be best.

Yes. It is not uncommon for a worn starter drive/ring gear combination to lock the engine.

Loosen (do not remove) the two starter bolts until you can wiggle the starter to determine if this is the issue.

Well I give up. I pulled the head tonight and it has the had crusty black stuff all in the cylinders and valves. It s like rubber carbon. The pistons were full of antifreeze also. My guess is the head gasket didn t seal and they tried some type of block sealer. Too bad really because it was a new motor. No carbon buildup and the the valves and pistons were looking new aside from the black gunk. I tried pulling it with my 850 and dropping the clutch in 4th. Didn t budge the crank at all. Sad to see this one in such bad shape. I was looking forward to getting ir running.
