2n sputters

Worked fine one day, parked it overnight then this (see video- hopefully it loads, both are < 5mb). Ignition components new this summer. Checked points gap and checked for tight connections and wayward Spark. Removed carb, cleaned and reset float/mixture settings. Good fuel flow to carb. Plug wires next... Any advice?

6 volt or 12 volt?

Front or side distributor?

Check for spark and fuel. (see tip # 13)

You need to answer 2 questions before you do anything else:

With the bolt in the carb bowl removed and the gas on, will the fuel flow fill a pint jar in less than 2 minutes?

Next, get out your adjustable gap spark checker * , open the gap to 1/4", hook it up, turn the key on and crank the engine. Does the spark jump 1/4"? Post back with the answers.

And do not buy a new part for the tractor until you can answer this question: how do I know the part on the tractor is defective?

Once you narrow the problem to spark or fuel, post back and tell us what you found (and how you found it) and you will get plenty of help to get your tractor running.

* Don't own an adjustable gap spark checker? Buy one! Not a test light! Until then, take an old plug, open the gap 1/4" ground it to the head & look for spark. It?s not the color of the spark that counts; it?s the distance it jumps.

Check for fuel flow like Bruce said, but first, how is the fuel level? Did you try opening the shutoff valve all the way? That sounds like a fuel delivery problem to me.

Thanks, will check those. I know almost certainly that fuel from the bottom of the carb would take longer than 2 min to fill that jar. More like me as a 50 year old trying to pee than me at 20;) carb is about a year old.

It may not be a problem with the carb, the stem in the sediment bowl can become partially plugged and it will restrict fuel flow to the carb.

Looks like a spark issue. Took the carb about one minute to fill a pint jar. With the spark gap tester the spark was strong and blue but only about every second or third revolution- wasn't consistent.

Oh the joys of an intermittent spark problem.

Start w/ the easy and simple stuff.

Make sure every plug wire and the secondary coil wire are firmly seated in the cap. Insure the wires are firmly seated on the plugs.

Are the wires new, or old & brittle?

Pull the secondary coil wire out of the cap, hold it ?? from the block and spin the starter over. Is it intermittent or not? If it?s intermittent, change the condenser.

If the coil spark is solid, then the problem is ?down stream?, i.e., rotor, cap, wires. Plugs.

This sounds like a 6-pack job to me.

Spark plug wires are fairly new, within 18 months. By secondary coil wire do you mean the line coming into the top of the can? This is a 2N front mount distributor.

If it is that pigtail wire coming into the top of the 12 volt coil I did that trick and that spark will not jump more than a millimeter or two. Battery spins it up just fine.
