I picked up an early 8n at auction ($875), runs decent, starts good, step up Sherman gear, newer tires (6 ply). Now the problem, they started and ran it at auction for about 5 seconds and I didn't notice hear the slight engine knock, number 4 cylinder. I've been running a year and no worse that I notice. Its got good oil pressure at hot idle, no smoke. Not an exhaust leak problem. It also goes away under slight load or when working. Seems maybe the worst at cold idle. I'm thinking rod bearing. The question is, can I pull the front end and cam gear cover, remove pan to access bearing without having problems with gaskets and seals? What are the odds that I can replace the bearing with same size number and eliminate noise. Any chance it may be lifter? I don't want to see rod going out the side of block. Thanks for any suggestions. Bill

Use a mechanics stethoscope to determine if the noise is in the upper or lower part of the engine. Could be a lifter needs adjustment.

Engine running remove one spark plug wire at a time if the noise changes it could be a rod knock. While you have the spark plug wire off intermittently allow the spark to jump to the spark plug tip id the knock changes it could be a rod knock... On a good cylinder no change in the noise on a bad cylinder the rattle will change as the spark ignites the mixture in that cylinder. You will be able to induce a pattern associated with spark and knock...

You will not be able to test this way in the video but this is a rod knock sound in the first part of the clip...
