9n front hub seals

I ordered a set of seals for the hubs of my 9n from this site. The seals are heavy rubber seals in a metal case. From reading old posts I have figured out that the rubber goes towards the spindle face. I also got two felt rings. Where do these go? Also how deep do the other seals get driven into the hub? Until the metal portion is flush to the hub? If there was a shoulder to stop them at I think mine are worn away. I had to machine sleeves to fit in the hub so the seal would fit snug. Thanks

I have gotten several from different places, never with any felt rings and as I remember they drive in as far as you an get the and stop on a shoulder inside the hub.

My hubs have no shoulder until close to the bearing race and that is 3/4 deep. Would they go that far?

If there is no shoulder for the seal to bottom out on, install it so that it is level with the bottom of the bevel at the top of the bore.

As a general rule, If there is a bracelet spring in the seal, the spring goes toward the oil you are trying to keep contained.

Theory-wise,
the wide sloped part of the lip faces outward. When oil pressure presses against the inner bevel, the lip of the seal pushes out. If the slope faced inwards, the oil would flow out without any resistance.

ut, what was Henry trying to do, seal grease in or seal dust out?

Ok, now the felt makes sense, but still wondering if 3/4 inch into the hub is too deep? Thanks for all the replies!

ook at where the seal lip is going to ride.........nice clean, shinny, smooth surface.

Ok, thanks for all the info. I will have to get the spindle and hub together and do some measuring. The spindles are about 75 miles away on the tractor. I took the hubs off to replace bearings and seals at home. Thanks again everyone!
