41 9N locked up somewhere....

I have a 1941 9N with something locked up. Tractor was overhauled by my brother about 15 years ago and last started 12 years ago. Last year I decided to resurrect it. Engine was set so trans fluid in jugs and rocking it in 3rd loosened it. Has spark and fuel but won't start with starter. Pulled it from storage a couple months ago to pull start it. Now will not turn engine over when pulled. Wheels run opposite directions. Engine still turns over with starter. Rolls fine in neutral or with clutch out. Have rocked it in all gears with PTO in and out. Filled trans with trans fluid and diesel. Was stored indoors and found a few oz. of water when drain plug removed. Has sat for a month with occasional rocking and no visible change. Thinking to remove trans cover but appears to be quite a job and I won't know what to look for when I do get in there. Certainly no enthusiasm to split and remove trans. Sorry for the epistle but wanted as much covered as possible. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Sounds like it's stuck in two gears. Possibly from children playing on it over the 12 years and not shifting it gently. Your only recourse is to pull the top cover and pry the shift forks back to neutral or at least one gear.

"Wheels run in opposite direction"...HUH? Tractor sat for 12 years and you really expect it to start right up? Zack, first take your battery to town and have the starter/alternator guy bench test it under load. Battery must meet specific gravity and maintain a full charge under load in order to start. If you did net use a float charger not a trickle charger, to keep the battery at a full charge then it likely is dead. If starter safety switch pushbutton only clicks or does nothing, battery is toast and needs a new one. Is it 6V/POS GRN or a 12V/NEG switchover? Don't do anything else except maybe check the fuel flow. Before you start new batter check the wiring out. Do not just start putting new parts in.

Have you checked for compression? It may have valves stuck open, which in that case it will never start. As for stuck in gear, you can pull the top cover off with
out much of a problem to see if it's stuck, but if it shifts to neutral it isn't likely.

Ummm.. :) new: battery, points plugs, fresh fuel, has spark and have etherized it as well. Yes, one wheel will turn each way when pulled in gear. Neutral or clutch out rolls fine. I don't understand. If bearing set somewhere or stuck in two gears, clutch or neutral shouldn't make a damn bit of difference should it?

Sorry new at this and I want to thank you guys for your time and support. I am not very good on transmissions and was hoping I was too ignorant to see something simple that one of you would say "do xyz and you will be golden".. :) Used to say every day I don't learn something is a wasted day. Sure as hell don't say that anymore.....

Don't want to be too long winded but should let you know the little 9N is still here because of sentimental value. It came to the farm new in 1941. I spent many hours riding on the fender in the fields with my father. 1st tractor I drove. Was retired to elevator, moving wagons and such in the 50's-60's. Was last used by my mother gardening and general yard work until her passing in the 90's then stored away in the shed til my brother pulled it out. It is my last tractor having sold a 560, a Super M, 2 C's, an H, 860, t-30, 37 A and 52 B. Last tractor project was paint, rings, sleeves and bearings on the Super M.
the little ford will run again regardless of the work required and won't leave the farm until I do.......

tzack ,You are sayin that the engine turns over with the starter but the rear wheels just drag when you try to pull start it.And it will roll when it is in neutral or the clutch is disengaged
Try pull starting it in 3rd gear,as the tires will just slide in 1st gear.
Does it have compression on all 4 cylinders when you crank it with the starter. If not the valves are stuck open.If so you need to pull covers and free up the valves with some PB Blaster.
Does any oil pressure show on the gauge when cranking it over

Tried pulling it in 3rd. Slide or rotate opposite directions. Engine fan doesn't move when rocking it in 3rd. Compression is kinda unknown. Old thumb pressure test showed compression. May cheat give it a dose of 12v to see if any improvement. I will run a real compression test and check valves. Think I will move one of my project cars out of ther shop for a good place work on it. And drag out the impact wrench... 78 year old bolts should be a treat.... :) Oil gauge moves a bit when cranking.
Thanks for your help! Never as easy as it looks...
