Sorry this might get a little lengthy, not sure how long it's been sense this tractor has been ran or any background, with that finally fired it up this weekend started fairly easy ,but took about a minute to get any oil pressure, then only around 20# at hi rpm ,drops to nothing at idle, 2nd my volt meter new, varies with rpms also 30 to 15 and in between. 3rd lift arms when drained the fluid lifted for about an hour then went back down, now new fluid 80 90w went back up when I started it the first time but will not go back down ,thanks for any help in advance.

1.Sounds like the engine has a serious oil pressure problem. You might be able to get several more hours out of it using 20-50 oil.
2. Are you sure you have a volt meter or an ammeter? If it's a 12 volt, 30 to 15 amps is not out of the question if the battery is weak, but 30-15 volts is high.
3. Sounds like the control valve down in the pump is sticking. Pull the left side inspection plate off and look way down to the bottom of the sump. When you lower the control lever you should see or maybe you will have to feel the linkage pull the valve out toward the rear.
What are your plans for this tractor? If you are looking for a project/hobby great, but you will be money ahead if you spend that money on something newer. I say this and am an owner of a '44 2N. I spent a lot money on it and it still has an oil pressure problem like yours. Everything else works well on it but after many hours and dollars.

put a new oil gauge on it first could just be a bad gauge ,, amp gauge should read about 6 amps not volts

I purchased my first "N FORD" last Fall from original family...1945 2-N. Had not ran for 30 + years.

I would not allow the Transmission and associated components AFT of the transmission to operate (Blocked Clutch Pedal DOWN) until I performed an inspections?.Cleaned.....NASTY STUFF.

I've seen to many hydraulics ruined by / with contamination..

On the initial engine start up the original engine oil gauge with new oil and filter registered 40+ oil psi.....????

New gauge ..15-40 oil...as per pictures..20 + psi.
Installed new 175 F Thermostat

The Generator on my 2-N is of a ONE WIRE configuration...with an adjusting screw (Flat blade)that allows you to adjust the out put "Amperes".

Pics to assist you if you decide to investigate further...

My back ground has no experience with the Fords "Ns"......and still very little...??:)

May I ask....did you operate this Tractor.. Engine...Transmission, Hydraulics and Differential with the oil that was in the compartments at the time you purchased this tractor?
