went to use tractor this morning turned key on and pressed button and nothing, like it is dead. when i jump the solenoid it starts. thinking maybe the starter button? tractor is an 1952 8n ford tractor. any help would be great and thanks in advanced.

All the starter button does is ground the solenoid.

Do that with screwdriver from the little post on the solenoid to the block.

Then do the same thing from the starter button to the transmission cover.

Make sure the tractor is in neutral.

DEAD BATTERY. If the solenoid, so it must be an 8N, just click-click-clicked then a weak battery dying. When was the last time you ran the tractor? The best investment you can buy with a new battery is to get a good float charger like the Battery Tender unit, about $30 Wally World. If tractor doesn't run for 30 days or more, getcha one. Keeps battery maintained so it has a full charge when you need it. Don't waste your time trying to charge current battery, chances are it has seen its days.

I was about to go on here with the complaint that I'm having trouble adding the right thickness to the starter switch on my 9n so I don't have to push so hard on the button. Would it be much of a big deal to replace that stuff with the solenoid from an 8N? I could add a push button on the dash to ground it.

There are 3 different start pushbutton switches on the 9N/2N. You may have the wrong one. Or yours is worn. Some guys put pennies under them to shim. You don't want to put an 8N starter on your 9N -then you'd have to buy all new wiring for one. Besides, it isn't needed -your 9N starter and wiring will work just fine when properly set up. PLUS, the issue is with the starter switch pushbutton. How is that going to get solved with an 8N starter and solenoid? Is your pushbutton on the dash or the top of shifter cover near the gear shifter lever? Many fellers confuse the starter switch pushbutton with a solenoid and is isn't -two different animals.

First, I didn't mention replacing the starter on my 9N. I merely threw out the idea of bypassing the starter switch on it with a solenoid to see if anyone knew of any complications in doing so. Apparently there aren't any! However, none of that will happen as I got the right combination of spacing on the switch with three 5/16" washers with a total thickness of 5/32". Problem solved!
