Water pump checkup on 8N

Is there a way to check the water pump on my 1950 8N 12 volt side mount while it is still on the tractor? I have pulled the radiator and am replacing the radiator, upper & lower hoses, filler cap and thermostat, but I would like to be sure the water pump is working properly WITHOUT pulling it from the engine. Can some of you gurus think of a way to test it and make sure it's pumping water before I put it all back together again? Thanks in advance for all replies!

The actual gurus will hop on this, but I would check to make sure the shaft doesn't move up, down or sideways. When you turn the shaft, is it smooth and quiet? However I would ask myself, Do I want to pull the sheet metal, and radiator off again to replace a failed water pump in say, a year from now? If the answer is No, then I would just replace it now.

"It is possible to replace the water pump without removing the sheet metal and the radiator!"

Indeed it is. As long as the water pump doesn't fail and put the fan through the new radiator.

Other than checking for play, noise and leaks as Jim L suggested, I don't have any great test ideas.
I have taken them off and found the fins rusted or broken half off.
Hard to see that without removing them.

If you are asking about a flow test, warm the engine with the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens. Make sure you add enough coolant to the radiator to see the flow in the radiator and rev the engine. If the radiator is not clogged the coolant should be able to be seen flowing in the neck of the radiator. The upper hose MUST be at operating temp. or hot for this test. If it doesn't flow the radiator may be plugged which would require further testing.

I think you missed the whole point of his question.

The before you put it all back together again part is the problem. If you checked it before you took it all apart that would have been better. I would always tend to replace it instead of trusting a possible 70 year old part. But then again in today's world of bad new parts sometimes you're better off with a 70 year old part than a brand new one.
