Lower the Speed?

I am aware there is a rare old sherman trans that would lower the ground speed of an 8n. Is it feasible to find one, is there another newer
one, or what old Ford would prove good for say a roto tiller?

The Sherman Combo also lowers ground speed and is not as rare
as a Sherman Step-down, but neither are good for a roto-tiller as
they also lower the PTO speed.

Howard made a transmission for the N's that was designed to run
the Howard roto-vator (roto-tiller). They can be hard to find in
working condition but do not reduce PTO speed.

Best old Ford tractor for a roto-tiller IMHO would be one with a SOS.
Next to that, a 3000 or similar with an 8 speed.

It's not a Sherman; it's a Howard. If you can find one in decent shape, it will cost as much as a decent 8N.

A disc, drag and field cultivator will work as well as a tiller but it will take a bit of experience and more time.

I got a deal on a tiller which stays attached to the 2010 M-F. I must admit it's easier to make one pass and have a planting bed ready, but my disc/field cultivator and drag does the same thing.

I got a Howard in one of my 8n's, it really slows the machine down, I use it at times when I am mowing.

Think outside of the box.
For the price of a decent N plus a Howard you can get one of these.
Tiller capable 8 speed, live hydraulics, power steering, differential lock, live pto, 50% more horsepower, remote hydraulic capable, more reliability and longevity.
Gas or diesel.
All on a platform just a little bigger than an N.
Best of all it will still be familiar to you. Like the younger, prettier sister of an old sweetheart.

Thanks. Really wanting it to go slower sometimes when mowing, love the old red/white tractors best and wanted to stay with them. Wonder about a Super A with finish mower.

"Really wanting it to go slower sometimes when mowing"

Well that's totally different than running a rototiller.
A Howard, if you could find a working one, would probably be
ridiculously slow for mowing and the Shermans would still have
the changed PTO speed problem. I would just put smaller tires
on the back and upshift when I wanted to mow faster.

I mowed with a Farmall and a belly mower. Worked Ok.
Some of the same issues. No live PTO, etc.
My Farmall had live hydraulics though.

(quoted from post at 20:13:23 08/17/19) It really rides much smoother when going real slow, Time I have, a good bad I do not!

Don't ever get on a machine that has a full suspension seat. You will be spoiled for life ;-)
