Sherman combo

I just bought an 8N that has a Sherman combo that won't go into the high side.Apparently the shifter mechanism is worn enough that it won't slip all the way back to engage.Anyone know if I can get at the shifter by pulling the top off the transmission housing instead of splitting the tractor?

Paul,Yes you can get at it by removing the steering cover of the transmission. But if you need to disassemble more than the top cover of the Sherman for repair it will need to be split.I would split it in the first place as that is just about as easy as removing the dash and box.

Thanks Den...............I thought that would be the case, but wasn't sure.I've had a lot of experience with 9Ns and 2Ns,but this is my first 8N.

Thanks again

Paul

Paul,I just split a Jubilee to fix the Combo Sherman that would not shift, turns out it was a worn ball bearing in the shifter mechanism,I think it was a 5/16 if I remember right, you should just split the tractor,it was only a half a day job from start to finish.

I have removed the top cover from the sherman thru the steering box hole once. It was a fight. As others have said a split will be easier.
