GL5 lube in the transmission

A question about the hydraulic fluid to put in an 8N...

The Ford manual specs their stuff (134 etc...)but also says that 80/90 gear lube will work OK as hydraulic fluid as well depending on the season. Is there any yellow metal in the works that is going to get destroyed by using GL-5 lube?

No. A modern GL-5 gear oil will work just as well if not better than the mild EP gear oils that Ford was recommending in the 40's. You should also note that a multi-grade SAE 80W90 is a heavier oil than both a monograde SAE 80 and Ford M2C-134D. In sub-freezing weather it will be thicker and slower to perform in the hydraulics than either of the other two oils.

The story is that I finally put a 1 3/8" PTO shaft in with the over-run coupler. I drained and sucked out what old fluid that I could with a vacuum extractor prior to putting in the 80/90.

Do you know if there is a conflict of chemistry if a minor amount of the 134D is still in the trans when adding the 80/90?

(quoted from post at 10:31:09 07/22/19) What is your take on using GL 1 as opposed to the other choices?

IMO it is the worst choice going because it has no extreme pressure additives in it. Contrary to the prevailing myth it is not what Ford recommended for the N-deries tractors. Consult your Owner's Manual - it says "[b:5baff5b02f][u:5baff5b02f]mild EP[/u:5baff5b02f][/b:5baff5b02f] SAE 80 or SAE 90". And just FYI, as far as viscosity grades go here is how the viscosity curves of the various products compare. The 134D (aka UTF) is a vastly superior hydraulic oil in cold weather.

Over the years I've tried all of the different fluids in my 8N. The 134 fluid works the best all around. The thicker fluids would be so thick in cold weather you would have to warm the tractor before you could engage the PTO or it would stall the tractor. With the 134 there is no problems in cold weather.

Yeah, I saved what I drained before installing the PTO shaft.
Think that I'll dump it back in there before winter. I wasn't having problems with a slow lift so much. The opportunity arose to change it and I did not know how long the the last batch was in there.

A 5 gallon pail of generic UTF is $35 - at that price I would would not reuse old oil.

Use the gl1 80 90 weight or you will have hydraulic lift problems. You have to let the engine warm up in cold weather.
