Day at the airfield with the 8N

perfect tractor for a small grass airfield. I got there early around 7. Filled the gas tank, and checked the oil. I didn't want to mow runway until the dew was off, so I used the loader to lift my chipper off the trailer. No ramps, no tipping, no nothing, just grab a chain and lift and move.

Neighbor heard me duffing around, and came over with a glass of ice tea. We shot the BS for a few mins, and I had him help me hook up the brush hog. I scraped his two 1 acre lots that hadn't been touched since early May. Waist high all kinds of green things growing in there. Yes, I had to lift the tool a couple times when it bogged, but I went right back over those spots, and they got knocked down second time. I'm no mean expert on hogging, but I know sharp blades make a big difference with low HP.

While I was over there, he wanted an engine off his little Piper. Usually this is a job with a boom, or a truss, or some kind of big tree branch, or three guys and a lot of grunting. I just put the loader over the center of the engine, we hooked up two chains, pulled the last mount nuts off, and I had it on his bench in 4 mins.

Time to mow. We have a 72" finish deck, that is a fair amount of torque needed. It's old, and not very pretty, but we are kinda touchy about the even grass on the runway. I let some air out of the rear tires to keep it from bouncing, although we have 4 wheels to keep it level. With full air in the tires, it still can give a little bounce, I don't know why. Started on the apron area to the side of the runway, and got it pretty nice. We setup our red beacon on a pole on the back axle and I got on the runway, and started in the middle. About 90 min later I got all 3000x40' done nice and clean. Finished with the visitor parking area. Need to be real careful, as we have some tie-down ropes hiding there.

After that, I towed a Cessna from one hanger to another with a long tow bar. Backing it into the hangar, with an articulated tow bar on the nose gear was interesting. Took me a few tries, wish I had a lower R gear. also would like power steering, but it ain't gonna happen.

My next door neighbor is putting up a fence for his 3 dogs. I haven't been very happy about his dogs leaving land-mines on my apron in front of hangar, so I offered to bore a few holes for him. He had them laid out, and I dropped the tow bar, and put on the auger. Pretty soft dirt, and we've had rain so I had 14 holes done in about 40 mins. A couple he has to dig by hand as I couldn't get in close to obstructions.

The county filled some potholes on our gravel road, and laid down some chat, but it wasn't very even. So, I put on the box and drug the road a few times. Not sure I made it a lot better, but seems the chat was a bit smoother. Hard to say.

Did no ag work, planted nothing, tilled nothing, plowed nothing. But still - a perfect tool for our little field. Made a lot of jobs go plenty faster than otherwise.

Doc,It sounds like you and the 8N got a good Saturday "N" July workout, keeping you both in shape and your batteries charged up. :D

Nice post Doc but I'm going to pick it
apart a little - or a lot - and compare
it to a 3000
"I had to lift the tool a couple times
when it bogged, but I went right back
over those spots, and they got knocked
down."

If you had live hydraulics you could
have stomped on the clutch which would
have stopped everything and still be
able to raise the mower with the clutch
down. Better yet, you could have stomped
the clutch Half way down which would
have stopped the tractor and let the
live pto keep running to catch up.
Best of all, you would have had 38 HP
instead of 25 or so and the tractor
wouldn't have choked in the first place.

"About 90 min later I got all 3000x40'
done nice and clean."

According to the Nebraska Tests an 8N
Will produce about 9.39 horsepower hours
per gallon of fuel (hp hrs/gal)
A 3000 diesel produces about 16 hp
hrs/gal so is Way more efficient.

"Took me a few tries, wish I had a lower
R gear."
8N reverse speed at 1750 rpm (pto speed)
is 5.31 mph.
Reverse speed on a 3000 w/8 sp in low
range at 1900 rpm (pto speed) is 2.2
mph.
And with much more torque you can inch
it backwards at very low rpms much
easier.
If you were in a hurry you could put it
in high range and go 8.0 mph at the same
rpm.

"also would like power steering, but it
ain't gonna happen."

Yes, PS is great. Especially with a
loader. So is differential lock, more
reliability, greater longevity, more 3
point lift capacity, greater loader
capacity, higher hydraulic flow with
remote capability, plus other
improvements - all on a platform not
much bigger or more expensive than an N.
As Ford stated in their 1960s era
advertising:
Do More work - More easily, for less
money than ever before!"

No question a 3000 will do more than an 8N, but then so will a Cessna 172 Skyhawk do more than a Piper Cub. Folks fly and enjoy both for what they are.

(quoted from post at 06:32:05 07/14/19) Nice post Doc but I'm going to pick it

I got the tractor for free with a plot of land I bought. $400 for the Wagner loader, a set of new back tires for $650. Some odds and ends, I'm into the rig for about $1400. Ford 3000 with loader in ANY kind of good running shape is > $4000.

$2600 diff will buy 1000 gallons of non-Eth gas for the plane. At a burn rate of 9 GPH that's about 110 hours of flight time. For 110 hours of flight, I can bother with pushing a clutch a few times, spending an extra 30-45 min in the seat, and using ArmStrong power steering.

Priorities.

Don't get me wrong, I've said and will say again, I'd like a 3000 with a loader. But saying 'I would like...' and actually spending > $4000 for a good one are different things.

Someone find me a good running, no excuses Ford 3000 or MF 265 with loader for cheap.

(quoted from post at 08:51:14 07/14/19) sounds like a great day, would love to see pictures

I'm not much of a take pics kind of guy, but I have one from last week just the plane, hangar and a bit of runway. The runway is to the left of the hangar. The acres I brushed were to the far right, out of screen. Tractor is kept in the hangar on the right side.

ice and tidy........don't expect that I'll ever get there.

I bought it from an estate, and it was fairly run down. I've been working weekends to get it clean and sorted. We still have a way to go but it's pretty nice now I guess. The next big job is to trim that Pecan tree back, as it's scuffing on the roof and has been for a while. I think I'll hire that work out, as I don't want to be up there sawing.

Next job is finish the hangar up in NM. I've got to finish the roof. There are pics of the 8N lifting steel trusses. Now I'm putting up the purlins, and hope this fall to get the R panel on.
