starter bendix

I need to replace the starter motor Bendix on my 1948 ford 8n. (teeth are worn off) The ones I see for sale do not look like the one I have taken off mine. Mine has a spring on the end and the ones I see for sale do not have a spring. At least it looks like the thing on the end away from the gear are solid.. My parts book shows a spring. Can anyone advise me as to what I need to do. Can I buy one from somewhere with the spring or will the other one work? Thanks in advance.

Bob ,That is the improved starter drive,it is much better than the old spring type.

Thanks, is there any thing special I need to know when installing it and installing starter?

They can be a son of a Buick to install :evil: Don't extend the drive they are a P.I.T.A. to get retracted...
