Discing with 8N

I've been discing at a bit lower than full throttle.

Can I just go to full throttle and pick an appropriate gear?

Or is that to much to sustain?

Things sound okay though when actively discing with full throttle, long as I back off throttle before putting the clutch in...

Any thoughts?

(max throttle set around 2200 rpms)

Depends on how rough your ground is. I plowed down 8 acres last fall and had to disc in 1st gear the first pass. By the third pass, I was going in third gear. I usually set my throttle so it's pointing at the second screw on the quadrant.

When I was in AG IV class in high school
our teacher told us these old tractors
were built to run WOT all day every day.
Of course you don't Have to run them
like that but you can without hurting
them.

Growing up we ran the '51 8N WOT except with PTO implements or when cultivating young corn or soybeans.
You have to know, with a Sherman Combo, this kid always ran WOT on the road. LOL
Have to tell you that the engine has been rebuilt 3 times since it was new.

We had an 8N - it was the only tractor on a 80 acre dairy farm when I first started driving. Later dad bought another tractor but the 8N still worked full time during the season. The only time we used full throttle was on the road. For belt work (grinding feed with the hammer mill) dad used 2000 RPM. PTO work was at 1500 RPM. Field work was between 1500 to maybe 1800. We never worked the tractor in the field at full throttle. Dad told me some people do but we don't.

The tractor is not going to break running at 2200 RPM but it is much more pleasant listening to the engine at 1750 on the disc than 2200.

I don't run MYSELF at Full Throttle and seldom ask my equipment to do the same... It is in YOUR hands....

We didn't do tillage work with our 8N anymore by the time I came along but in the field pulling, we ran our 5000
wide open. Most PTO work was done at rated RPM except for grinding feed and chopping silage which was wide open
also. No offense to Indiana Ken but my Dad never wanted a tractor run at full throttle on the road, said it was
hard on the engine as it wasn't under a hard enough load. Still have that 5000 and I personally know it has over
20,000+ hrs on it by now. I will admit that it needs an overhaul by now but it still runs good. The 8N did
mowing duty and other PTO work mostly. Sorry for long post but I would say if your tractor is in good shape you
should be fine running at wide open if it's not too rough. Just my 2 cents worth Greg NE
