I've got an oil leak coming from where the governor meets the housing. I'm guessing it's a bad gasket. Do I need to drain the oil before I remove the governor to replace the gasket?

no. be sure u keep track of which bolt comes out of which hole. if u swap them, u won't like what happens. i did this job recently, was talked into using ultra black permatex instead of a new gasket - it's a good seal :)

also, don't overtighten the bolts (which you've kept track of which goes where) when u reassemble, or u can warp the housing.

Thanks! You would recommend the ultra black permatex over a normal gasket?

I read about the bolts in another thread, but thanks for the heads up. Definitely don't want to damage the cam!

Those governors warp REAL easy as most think when they see a small leak, they need to tighten the two bolts more. Then it leaks more, so more tightening. Etc, etc,... I was guilty of that before I learned this as well.

I don't like putting sealant where it was not designed to go (but do not judge those that do if it works). My solution is to pull the guts out of the governor and put a piece of ~300 grit metal sandpaper on a very flat surface such as a piece of glass and sand the mating area until all surfaces of the mating area are shiny. Then put it all back together and snug the bolts to just tight (or, follow the torque rating in the manual). It has fixed my leaks every time without sealant.

Good luck,
Dan
