I have a clean 9n... so question for you all...

I have a descent 9n coming, it needs put back together and possibly re wired. I also have a chance to buy a Howard rear end for an 8n. If I got the rear end, could I fit it to the 9n? WhT issues would I possibly run into? I want it for a tiller. Are the Howard auxiliary s rare? I m sort of new to this... I have a ferguson to30 and it s a beast, but it goes to fast for a tiller. I got a really good deal on the 9n and am looking to possibly run a tiller with it as it has the Sherman step up/step down tranny. IF I can fit the Howard to the step up/down combo I m sure that would run the tiller easily.

The Howard will fit all N-series tractors. With it there is no need for or advantage to the Sherman when running a tiller. It will simply screw up the PTO/ground speed ratio the Howard is designed for. That said finding a Howard in good working condition is problematic. Stripped reduction gears are all to common.

I see, is this somthing that parts are available to rebuild? Also, does the Howard include the whole rear axle assembly? Or is it an add on that is removed and added to another rear axle?

The parts needed to repair a Howard with stripped reduction gears are unobtainium. Nobody has been able to come up with a cost effective way to make replacements. The Howard I am talking about goes inside the rear center section just above and forward of the hydraulic pump.

(quoted from post at 14:04:15 06/15/19) so it s an add on... the same one I m taking about.

Here is a picture of a Howard installed in the rear of an N-series tractor. It bolts to the rear of the main transmission and couples the output shaft on the transmission to the pinion shaft on the differential.

I dont know about the Howards.
Listen to TOH on that.
If I had a basket case 9/2N and access
to a cheap 8N rear end I would combine
the two.
Use the rear center housing from the 8N
and couple it to the 9/2 transmission.
This would give you the 3 speed
transmission which I thought was
superior to the 4 sp plus position
control and a real drawbar.
I don't remember about the brakes -
which type you would use.
There is a guy here Farmer Dan did it so
he could help.
The Sherman wouldn't make much of a
difference whether it had it or not as
you usually would only use the Howard
for rototilling.
