O/T - Just Checking In

Been quite some time since I have posted, but rest assured I am still putting Delilah my 1948 8N trailer Queen and Rustbucket through their paces on 8N Acres. We now have a weekend "Tiny House" and a storm shelter in place and getting ready to retire in less than a year to open up more free time to work on old iron. Finding out front mount distributor points don't much like sitting around without running, and seems every time I get the urge to fire the 8N up and run it around the place I am always having to first pull the distributor and run a dollar bill through the points so it will fire up ;-) Rustbucket now has 14 years of mowing service (time sure fly's by when you are having fun) and I may have to bring the old boy back in for a sleeve job soon. Other than that, he is still working hard as old Henry would have wanted - a testament to Ford's commitment to build things that last, and the forgiving nature for an old city boy to fix it back up for service with very little experience!

Good to see all the old guys still here and catch up with the new ones. Until next time, keep that old iron running!

I have had more trouble with using a dollar bill. Imagine how many hands have held a used one and potentially how much oily residue is on them. I use a clean piece of paper, white or brown store bag. I have virtually no problem with my 8N points. The last time I replaced them was last spring with about 10-15 years on them. I kept them for an emergency as they looked quite good.
 

Yeah, you're right of course - just force of habit from my old automotive shop teacher waaaaaay back in 8th grade. I always buy my points from Napa as the more common aftermarket parts from the "Land of almost right" does not seem to last long or line up correctly. I probably should keep some brown paper bags around the shop but the dang mice seem to love making nests out of them ;-)

I would expect, that after all this time.....your 'Rock collection' has grown emence!!! :lol:

I now have THREE fire pits, and all of my shrubs and cactus gardens are now ringed in rocks! Dug a big deep hole for my storm shelter and still did not find even one small rock.

I was searching for some info on an NAA
a while back and came across some of
your Rustbucket posts.
I'm glad to hear you're still kicking
and it's still running.
As to those pesky points, Ford did build
some pretty good diesels you know.
Ask GB in MT about them.

I have a KILLER way to clean those points with out taking the dist off courtesy of JMOR... (if I can find it I think I can)

I would trust that you could handle it with out a "shocking" experience... :wink:

Hey Dan, Good to hear from you. Glad to hear you are still in the tractor hoby. You are right about those front mount distributors. They need
to be run often to stay in firing condition. Do you still have the '39?

Still have the 39. My tractor list is now 39 9N, 48 8N, 54 NAA, 2006 Kioti DK45 (needed a front end loader and grapple), and a 1986 Ford 755 loader/backhoe (gifted from my FIL who retired from pool digging) for the really big stuff! Hard keeping all the batteries charged up and running them from time to time with my part-time weekend trips to the property.
 

JMOR sent me that email last night - ingenious! The backs of my knuckles are already thanking him from being scraped up by the radiator fins getting those two bolts out of the distributor and coil out of the way!
 

My wife and I (and my back) got REAL tired of cleaning up trees/shrubs from 42 acres that was overgrown from over 50 years being left vacant by cutting with a chain saw (trees had to be chained into pieces small enough to be manually picked up by hand), stacking it on a trailer being pulled around by my 8N, towing to a burn pile, then manually unloading the stuff onto the pile. I was getting waaaay too old for that. Now, I just grab all those trees (sometimes whole) and limbs and such with the grapple, drive over to the burn pile, and add it to the top with the front end loader. As a bonus, I can listen to classic rock on the radio in the cab and keep cool on those hot Texas Summers with the air conditioning while "working"! Almost the best money I ever spent! And, it makes cleaning up the property so much quicker.
