I replaced the seals in the PTO shaft and in the process removed the PTO lever and site hole. In reinstalling it, I am making sure that the little foot is sliding right in-between the two washer deals on that internal shaft (as it's supposed to be) but then it does not move. I'm pretty sure it's coming together right, but it just wont move when bolted. Am I missing something? Off the tractor, the lever moves with ease. Thanks

IMHO this is not a good practice when dealing with parts that should move, but don't.
It worked before you messed with it? It doesn't work now? Something isn't assembled correctly. Just my $.02.

I still would remove the PTO shaft and check for damage or twisted splines.

Yeah I didnt see any of that prior to me last post. Thanks for the info. Just to be clear, I am prying on item A to engage or disengage, and i am doing so through the port window where the lever used to be.

hopefully this link will work if not link copy and paste. I don't think dropping the pump would help you any but you may have to split the tractor aft of the transmission. I would pull the shaft and look for burrs or damaged splines. Always do the easy stuff first.

I can get it to move onto the engaged position with a pry bar and can disengage it if I work at it enough, but that last 1/4" of shaft movement towards disengagement just doesnt want to go. With Hercules strength and patience on the pry bar it does finally go. I moved it back and forth 3 or 4 times, but it didnt seem to help. So are my only options shaft removal followed by pump removal if that doesnt work?

Third Party Image

item e in drawing is what moves on the PTO shaft. if splines are damaged it will not move like it should.

The shaft does not move, You need to disassemble your tractor and see how all the parts work. You could remove the round plate with the PTO lever on it and take a look at the PTO shifter assembly. If you do not have the service and parts manual I would suggest you get them. They are worth having.

It is hard working on something without knowing how it all works.

So when it disengages the PTO, is it actually moving the shaft back? If not, how would damaged splines impact the PTO lever?

Maybe damaged splines.

I was wondering about that. Let's assume the lever works with no shaft...what do you think that would indicate? I cant imagine it's possible to shove the shaft in too far. In fact, that seems impossible.

I think I would remove the PTO shaft and see what the lever does with the shaft out.

I've tried every direction. I was able to get it to disengage when I hot the shaft with a screwdriver and hammer. Then I replaced the lever again and the lever still wont engage or disengage. I was able to wiggle the lever enough to get it to partially engage from that point. Not sure where to go from here to be honest.

Have you tried to move the lever to the front which would disengage the PTO?

It's almost like the lever is in the engaged position then. But the PTO is engaged. When I bump it and apply pressure, I can get it to kind of pop towards the back of the tractor, but nothing ever changes with the PTO. Just always stays engaged as far as I can tell. I loosened the pump again with the same results.

lever back = PTO engaged. lever forward = disengaged.

Sounds dumb to ask, but at this point I want to be doubly sure I'm doing right. It's engaged now, as the PTO shaft doesnt move when I attempt to turn it by hand. To disengage, I'm pushing the lever towards the back of the tractor, which pushes the rod in the opposite direction towards the front. Is that correct?

Put transmission in neutral and while holding pressure on PTO lever to engage, hit starter.

Still seems jammed. As I recall, it should move a fair amount, to the tune of 3". The shaft does move maybe 1/4" back and forth, so it doesnt appear to be just completely frozen. When disengaged, it should free the PTO shaft causing it to spin freely, correct?
I guess I could completely drop the pump. That shaft should move freely after its dropped, shouldn't it?

loosen the pump bolts and try to engage, before you drop the pump.

Try moving the tractor an inch or two then retry. Remember you are trying to engage a gear.
