Lift Arms Up and Locked

8N, 12v, front-mounted distributor: While changing implements yesterday from subsoiler to disc, but before the disc was connected, I raised the lift arms fully to the top position and they will not come down. Draft/position control does not affect, neither does lift lever or PTO lever position. Normally the arms drift down in a few minutes after the engine is off if an implement is still connected, or overnight without anything connected, but they have not budged after 24 hours. Anything I can do other than removing lift cover?

You could try removing the inspection cover off the right side
and making sure the control lever is actually moving and that
it's moving the control valve as it should. You can activate them
manually at that point as well. No need to have it running.

Royce even then its hard to tell because the cam on the lift control will cam over giving a false feel BUT the lift leaver will feel tighter than normal in its working range...

I have went thru the inspection hole and pryed them free by prying on the control rod to the pump...

The best way is to remove the pump drain plug it gives you a straight shot at the pump controls... Most of the times it happens when the tractor has set up I have one that did it shortly after I had rebuilt the pump I pryed it free its been good ever since.. Those that I did not drop the pump and clean out also have never stuck again that I know of...

I don't know if it can, but you could pull an inspection cover to reach up there and see if the hydraulic piston connecting rod dropped down and got in a bind when your lift arms went all the way up. Easier than pulling the top cover, I'd think.

This is kind of out there but based on my own experience.
If the cam and cam follower pin are badly worn it seems that sometimes the pin can slip off the cam enough to jam the linkage. Pushing up on the arms manually may release the bind.

Hi Hobo, you replaced the axles on my first 8N; the lift was OK on that one, at least then. It now goes through spells of dropping the implement suddenly to the ground, but then will work fine for the next few hours. This one was purchased more recently and the lift system usually works. Both of them are a little quirky and probably need work by someone with more experience than me! I wish you were closer!

Rarely (at least under my shade tree) does the most simple idea ever fix anything, but Deano's idea was the first thing to try and when manually lifting both arms together I sort felt a click in the housing and the arms lowered. Haven't had this happen when an implement is connected, perhaps the weight is enough to keep it from slipping off inside. So looks like the garden will get in on Thursday..., a very wet Spring has me a couple weeks late.
