Lifter adjustment

It's been rough going this winter but I'm now getting things back together on this 8n overhaul. Anyhow they put new valves with the adjustable lifters in and drilled holes to hold them while adjusting. I was able to get the #1 exhaust set but it turned very, very, very hard.

On the #1 intake all I did was chew up my wrench. I even ground the box end down and lifted the valve to set the wrench in place and it just stripped out the wrench.

The others seem just as tight. I'm going to see if I can find a flair nut wrench to fit in there but I doubt it. I understand that these must be tight but should these these turn THAT hard?

They should not be that difficult to adjust. I would contact your supplier of the lifters. They are not right.

I believe the adjuster nuts have an interference thread but they shouldn't be that tight. One of the adjusting nuts on ours was way too loose and I had to go back and peen the threads to make it stay put.

Thanks for the responses and advice I realty appreciate the help. I'll be looking into replacing these. This is my first flathead overhaul.

That's not uncommon for a used lifter that has carboned the threads up... Most of the new lifters are to loose and need a dab of loctite on the threads once adjustment has been set...

I use a ground down craftsman open end wrench most of the time...

Worst case you are gonna have to remove them and work the adjuster to free them up BTDT ONE TIME learned my lesson... If you have to dodat I hope you have a set of aluminum inserts for the jaws on yer vice...

I wondered about how to hold the lifters if I decided to work on them. I don't have aluminum jaws on my vice but I will for sure come up with something to hold them without damaging the surface. I've been reading about these today on various forums.

A poor boy would make a set out of wood... I remember those lifters wanting to spin the aluminum jaws out of the vice :(... I brought these from Sosmetal back in the early 80's... They have a magnetic strip to hold them in I have one in the vice to lazy to go get the other... I brought that Craftsman vice around 1975 its served me well..

I could use some jaws similar to that. I went ahead and ordered the spring tool for removing the clips on the valve guides on the flatheads. In a couple days I'll see what I can do with the lifters.
