8N 12 volt conversion wiring burning

In Nov. 2018 I successfully converted my 8N to 12 volts. Engine started successfully multiple times. Recently when I attempted to start it I found the
relatively new battery was dead. I replaced the battery and immediately after connecting battery cables, the wire from ammeter to the starter solenoid
began to smoke and insulation burned. I quickly removed battery cable to avoid a fire. I found this wire was the only one to burn. I?m surprised since
everything worked fine immediately after conversion but something has changed. Can someone please help me analyze this problem.

I would first suspect a short at or in the ammeter. Wires usually only burn between the power source and a load (ground). Unhook the wires from both terminals of the ammeter. Bypass the ammeter by using a jumper wire, with a 20-30 amp fuse in it, from the starter solenoid to supply all the wires on the load side of the ammeter. See if everything works without blowing the fuse. If fuse blows check the load wires one at a time to find the culprit.

st thought is that battery was connected backwards, i.e., + and - reversed.
