Electronic Ignition for 8n sidemount

Easy to install, just follow the instructions.
They work fine when they work. Do not expect added power or
easier starting compared to properly adjusted, quality points.
But you can expect to have little to no maintenance until they fail.
If/when they fail, expect to be down until you can get a replacement.

Pertronix tech support is great and replaced mine for free.
But it still took a week to get here so I'm glad I kept my points
to put back into it in the interim.

I'm still running a Pertronix in my 3000. So far, no trouble with
that one but the points and associated parts are here just in case.

Easy to install, easy to set the timing. The question you need to consider though is what are your expectations for EI? If you expect any results other than replacing the points and condenser, ( and the problems associated with them) you may be disappointed.

Thanks everyone! I failed to mention it?s a 46 2N with an 8N industrial engine that?s been converted to 12 volt.

My 8n with an industrial engine has a magneto on it, works great. Other 8n has points in a side mount dist, also works great. your tractor your choice.

I would suggest the Pertronix Ignitor II module (p/n 91244A) which unlike the Ignitor module sold here has built in protection against accidental reverse polarity and current overload . Greatly reduces the chance of frying the module if you leave the ignition switch on or have a momentary wiring boo-boo. IMO that insurance is well worth the extra $40.

Considering purchasing from this site. Any pros and cons?

Electronic Ignition's do not not like voltage spikes . If you have a dead battery or trying to jump start something it is not a problem if you give the dead battery a chance to charge before proceeding to start with the dead battery .

As a kid we would check the charging system by removing a battery cable and if it still ran the all was OK . Yeah that's a big no no even for your alternator components .

You can roll and pop the clutch with points and a severely discharged battery . That rarely happens these days .

The EI unit doesn't have a rubbing block or cam lobes that can wear down or contacts that erode so they keep the correct dwell . Sloppy bushing have less effect on EI units .

If an EI unit fails you stop right where you are at . Points will usually start sputtering and give you a warning . Points may build a layer of corrosion if the tractor is parked for a long period of time and will not function until they have been cleaned .

There are few manufactures of EI units and they are pretty dependable . As TOH mentioned the Ignitor II has extra protection if you leave the key on , other EI's and points usually burn up .

There are good points and there are cheap points . Some of the cheap sets have lasted less than a weak ( pun intended )

After 18 years on this board and seeing hundreds of fights over this subject it is nice to see a straight up conversation about EI.
Come to this board for good, reliable information on your tractor - and get it.
Kudos to you all.

Its cuzz the points lubbers have ran out of ammunition to back them up... All their dreamed up claims have got wet and don't fire as good...
