8N oil leak at top of timing cover .What's up?

I just bought this 49 8n which supposedly has a new sleeve set and bearings. Runs great and burns no oil. But it does have 60 lbs of oil
pressure when the engine is cold. I have a bad oil leak at the top of the timing cover. It is leaking right at the top bolt of the timing
cover just under the bottom bolt of the water pump. The leak is at the gasket I did not think there should be any oil behind the timing
cover.Could the timing case be filling with oil? Where could the oil be coming from? I thought it was from the cap holding the oil pressure
relief spring, but it is not. Is it from the camshaft seal? I don't know what's behind the cover and I didn't want to start tearing it down
before I had some idea what I would be getting into. Thanks for any help.
 
tomreif,First check all the front cover bolts and be sure they are tight.If they are tight and it is still leaking the cover gasket must be bad in that area.The oil is from the relief valve getting on the cam gear and flying of as it is running and leaking from the bad gasket seal between the front cover and the block.
 
Tom ,One thing I just thought of is,you might try is remove the relief valve plunger and make sure the slot is facing down and not up as it may be spraying oil directly at the gasket where it is leaking.It may stop or slow the leak down.
 

Pull the timing cover off and re-seal it chit happens... If you learn from your mistake chit like that don't happen again BTDT...
 
Den, Thanks for your idea. I think
you might be on to something. I did put in a new relief spring before the leak started. Never knew the plunger was supposed to go one way.
The 8n has a front mounted distributor. Do I have to pull the front end to replace the timing cover gasket? Thanks again
 

Whut I would do...

Plug off the oil fill tube...


remove the dip stick Apply 2psi no more than 5PSI air pressure to the crank case spary around the timing cover with bubble bath water mix are windex look for the leak... This is not gonna fix it but will be the tip to make sure its fixed before you put the timing cover back on..

I have BTDT so on all my repairs where I can I test for leaks while the engine is mounted to my engine stand it has saved a many hours of grief...

This is a pix where the leak was finger pointing at it after I had to replace the cover gasket and put a thin layer of RTV on both sides of the TC gasket... Every thing was perfect why it leaked I dunno chit happens I guess... I can tell ya it wont happen again thanks to RTV...

While looking for the lost pix another leak I had,,, all new parts the water pump gasket leaked under 1 pis pressure on the engine stand. I also pressurize the cooling system while the engine is on the stand :wink:

The fix a very light coat of Good RTV on the WP gasket... I should know better I have installed 1000's of WP they all get the RTV treatment now...
