Help identify my 9n

Hi, I just bought my first tractor! New here to the forums. Can you help me identify what year and confirm model?
Seller said this was a 1939 9n, but after some research I think it may be a 1941, but I am not sure. Here are a few pics.

A few things I read about was that the 1939's had 4-spoke steering wheels (mine has 3) and the 39's ignition key and starter button position is on the dash (my key is on the left side of steering column, and starter button down lower in the middle above the gear shift.) I read that the '41 9n had those changes, so maybe mine is a '41? Not sure.

The serial number badge is completely unreadable.

I'll post more pictures if need be. Thank you for your help!

Pics did not upload first time.

there is a lot of difference between the early 39 9n and later your serial # will tell you a lot , yours is not that early to have a 4 spoke wheel, smooth rear axles, 2 rib fenders snap in fuel cover , pusher fan , no bolt holes in dog legs , small dia generator , and on and on

too bad my serial number is completely illegible. Last pic on my second post show no noticeable number on the serial # badge. I have a feeling that it might be a Frankenstein tractor of sorts. I'll post a generator side pic soon.

I see no evidence of any effort made to clean the stamped serial number plate on left side of motor. Everything you need is right there on that plate. You need to take a power grinder with wire wheel to it. Removes all old paint, rust, oil. Be aggressive and persistent till it gets shiny.

With a small Wire brush the red paint off the flat spot. Dab some white paint with a Qtip on it, then wipe off the access paint. In most cases the numbers should be easier to read

Well, it ain't no '39 model and you don't use the generator as absolute defining criteria anyway. Unless it is an early 9N with the small ?A? or ?B? generator, it doesn?t mean anything. After s/n 12500 the generator was, at first, a 1-Wire/3-Brush 7-AMP A Circuit unit using the round can cutout introduced with the ?B? small generator. By ?41 the 9N-10000-C generator became an 11-AMP unit and the 2N-10000 unit was virtually the same only with a belt tensioning device. The 1-wire/3-Brush units were used all thru latter 9N and all 2N production. You have either a 9N-C or the 2N unit. Forget the s/n but if you must know, clean the boss area with paint remover, a mild brass brush but no sanding or filing. SEE LINK for John Smith?s archived Tractor History/ID page for most changes made, I?m not going to list them all here. The best thing you can do is invest in the essential manuals so you know what and how to deal with your tractor.

Take a fine wire wheel to it if ya like but get the paint off. I dont think by the photo there is a number. I have seen Ns without a # before. It could be a aftmk block or its a shallow stamped # and hard to see.

No such thing as an 'aftermarket block'. There were blocks that passed QC Inspection which were not serialized, held for service replacements and were supposed to get the old s/n stamped on when replaced, but no, nobody ever made blocks other than Ford. As I said below, the s/n is not important. A s/n only defines the year the block was cast, nothing more. MPC's came out once a year back then. Parts got revamped and changed in early, mid, and late year so may not show up until the following year MPC. My early 8N has an engine casting code of "I167" defined as engine block cast on September 16, 1947. Add about 30 days to get an APPROXIMATE tractor build date. See if there is a date code tag on the starter pocket. Get the parts manuals and go by what your current setup is. Other parts will have a date code tag. Look at the hydraulic pump base.

Welcome to the club! I just got my 9N tractor last week.

This is the best website I came across, that helped me to know what to look for and to compare the different components:

Someone from this forum directed me to the website - they are all very helpful!

Go to https://fordtractorcollectors.com/fordson/tractor-id-history/ and it will show you two photos comparing the differences.
