Gear reduction starters

Time for me to have my starter rebuilt. I certainly won't throw my starter away, but I have the itch for a gear reduction starter. Called the first place that popped up, and they listed 2n 9n and 8n as starters they carry. Immediatly asked for a tooth count, opening size, and distance between the bolt holes. I'm sure they make a nice starter, but made me wonder??????? If they make many, they might should have that info. Where could I order one of the shelf for a '52 8n?

Plenty listed on eBay - here is one:

I purchased one of those on Ebay a few years ago but have never installed it. I purchased it as a replacement if the one in my 8N ever craps out.

Of course if I didn't have that starter sitting in my storage shed, my 8N starter would crap out today.

My skid loader takes the same starter. I got a new one from my local starter rebuild shop. It is
unbelievable how much better it starts with the new starter. It is not a gear reduction unit.

Please let us know how installing it goes. As I said, I haven't installed mine yet.

(quoted from post at 09:26:27 03/09/19) It didn’t even remotely fit. I hate eBay.

I heard from other people that the big mounting plate with the bolt holes may have to be rotated into the correct position to fit the the "N" tractor. It's supposed to be built so you can rotate it to fit your bolt holes.

The second to last paragraph in the Ebay description tells you about rotating that plate. Did you try to do that yet?

I checked on his feedback page. There is one on the first page where and guy bought it for an "N" tractor and he rated it as excellent.

In what way didn't it fit... didn't the mounting hole spacing match the engine?

Or, did the mounting plate need to be turned as "Caryc" mentions?

(As you know, the appearance would be VERY different, as it has a short shaft and a drive the engages the FRONT of the ring gear, rather than from the rear, as the OEM unit did.)

Yes, this thing is hopeless. Even says it’s for an F350 on the box. It’s packed in news paper, with Chinese writing.

This thing is just not going to fit. Doesn’t even look the starter in the pic.

I like the way it looks like it engages. It’s never going to engage an 8n

Does your mounting plate look like this one? It has 8 holes to position the mounting plate on the starter where it needs to be.

Did you remove the two allen screws on the mounting plate? Did you then take just the mounting plate and hold it up to the hole in the tractor to see how the two actual mounting holes in the starter plate will line up with two holes in your tractor?

(quoted from post at 11:14:04 03/10/19) If my flywheel is getting worn, would a starter like this that did fit eliminate the problem?

Technically, yes, since it contacts the front of your ring gear whereas the old Ford starter contacts the back of the ring gear.

I noticed the flywheel was worn from the traditional side. I “thought” the new starter might keep me from cracking the thing open.

Have you contacted the seller to let them know they sent you the wrong starter?

Looking on ebay, I see they sell "mini starters" for quite a wide variety of applications, someone must have grabbed the wrong box!

I'll ask you this one more time although you don't seem to want to answer it. Di you remove the two allen bolts from the mounting plate and hold the plate up to your tractor to see if the two holes would in any position match up to two bolt holes in your tractor?

My starter does not look like the starter posted. Wife is sending it back. I don’t do much with the internet, and should have told her what I wanted to begin with. You were trying to help an old fool like me, and I apologize.

Turned the starter over to the misses. She’ll send it back. I’m sticking with the local parts stores.

Starter sent back, and got a local guy to order me a gear reduction for it. It's in and on. Replaced the ring gear on the flywheel. IMHO, the gear reduction starter makes all the difference in the world. My 12 year old daughter uses the tractor for chores occasionally. In the past, she was seldom succesful at starting the 8n. She has had no failed attempts at starting it all weekend. Worth it to me, to not have to quit what I'm doing to go start the tractor. Your mileage may vary

Is it the same type of starter that I posted in my pic in this thread? where did the local guy get it?

Yes, exactly the same. All he said was I can get them out of Nashville. His was about$200 though. I'm the kind, that's happy to pay the difference though.
