Wiring harness?

Since I am elbow deep in this Jubilee, and looking at the hacked up wiring harness (pet peeve of mine). Should I invest the time to make a harness, or are the wiring kits offered decent enough? The price on the kits seems very cheap, but like everything else for these tractors there is very little detail in the description. This tractor has everything in the factory places the only electrical change is that it was converter to 12v.

I like the idea of the kit, because I know if i build the harness it going to cost alto more since I am sure I will get carried away and include a modern fuse panel, relays for switches, soldering, heat shrink, etc and be $100 deep into a $20 harness.

I got a wiring harness from Dennis Carpenter when I restored my jubilee a few years ago. I was very happy with the quality and everything works well as designed.

I'm in the same boat: My '50 front distributor appears to have the original wiring and a lot of the insulation is breaking down.

Dennis Carpenter offers "Main Wiring Assembly-Less Spk Pg Wires
1948 - 50" for $89.95. Our hosts offer "Ford 8N Wiring Harness, 6 Volt" for $19.59.

Is it worth spending the extra $70? She is not destined to be a show queen.

NO use the cheaper one even on 12V's... Everything should lay out for a alternator you will have to tie some wires together where it mounted to the voltage regulator...

For the guys that like to roll there on that's OK if you stock all the wire colors and wire sizes with the proper terminals but paying me $100 a hour to do it is nonsense...

You guys are the best!!! Wire kit it is!!!
I am already getting in hot water with the
tractor home in the garage and the wife's
car outside in the MO snow and ice storms
lately.

I think I figured out the lift problem
(stuck unloading valve). So some cleaning,
seal replacements and fingers crossed.

The cheaper versions, and there are many sold today, are mostly junk IMHO. They use 18 GA vinyl covered wires that can and will fail in short time (pun intended). I would avoid those. I?ve had the vinyl wear off and short out, I?ve had some sets that had incorrect lengths, coming up short on one wire so I had to splice my own patch in. Dennis Carpenter makes exact-as-original wiring harnesses, cloth covered, correct color codes with and without the headlight wiring. nnalert sells all the Carpenter stuff too as the founder was DC?s QC man when he first started. Many other suppliers sell the DC stuff too only they mark them up 10-20 percent. It does matter who you buy from. I use a place called Agri-Services based in New York, owner is Jim Guarino ?click on LINK below. He makes EXACTLY as original wiring harnesses, made me one for my early 9N and early 8N too. I won?t buy cheap wiring ever again. It?s your tractor, invest whatever you want. Just giving you options because YOU ASKED.

I purchased a new wiring loom for my 8N because the wiring was original and was falling apart. I also purchased split loom in a roll for all the wires to avoid the wires rubbing through the insulation. I believe my tractor has only one fuse and having circuits without fuses bothers me. I also use split loom on hydraulic hoses when there may be contact with metal surfaces. Split loom is cheap insurance.

I actually design wiring harnesses for a living so when I added lights to my 9N I thought about just building a harness myself but when I saw that Dennis Carpenter sells an OEM style harness for $43 it was a no brainer, I just bought that. The lengths were perfect and everything connected up nice and easy.

OEM 6V 8N harness used for a 12V conversion you will end up with a extra wire you can use that harness on a 9/2N are a 8N and use the extra wire for the headlights...
