Jubilee -30 Amp reading

Hello All

I have a 53" Jubilee that when the battery is hooked up gives me a -30 reading on my ammeter regardless of key position and drains the battery. The battery was hooked up with the
negative to ground for about 10 minutes before it was swapped for the correct position. When it starts I get a +20 reading on the ammeter and the tractor seems to act fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ian

6 volt system and I just started it and it ran great. As soon as I turn it off straight to -30. I"ve been unhooking the battery after every use, but I don"t think this is a great
workaround.

You have it and/or something else wired incorrectly. Asking this once agin, is it OEM 6V/POS GRN or 12V/NEG GRN? These N's will run on either one, even a 12V battery in place of a 6V battery with nothing else changed out BUT, Switching polarity makes a difference in the polarization of the generator.

It is a OEM 6V pos to ground, but it was wired incorrectly for a short period of time before I caught it. It is now wired with the pos to ground.

Should I switch this to a 12v system?

Thanks for the help, i'm new to tractor ownership and maintenance.

ust do what virgil told you...........you will almost certainly find the cut out points in VR welded together. If not burned too bad, you may be able to separate & clean and be back to good.

Excellent! Thanks for the help, I'll be taking a look at that tomorrow. I've been reading some horror stories about replacing the VR, would it be worth it just to replace it?

would clean it up and go from there before jumping for replacement. When you started it with battery reversed, those cut out contacts instantly tried to connect a battery Positive to a generator Negative output and that "collision" produced great current through those contacts until the battery/generator battle was won by the battery and the generator was re-polarized. That is why it charged fine, but will not disconnect when turned off. Separate contacts and clean them . I have the original from 1950 8N that still works.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I pulled the voltage regulator and cleaned everything, replaced it and it is no longer going to negative 30! Now it's struggling to start, and I'm
getting some smoke coming off of the top of the relay switch. I'm currently trickle charging the battery and it's pulling 5 amps. I'm wondering if I may have drained it while
running with the -30 amp issue. I'm pretty certain I installed the VR correct and I polarized it before trying to start.

Any ideas why the relay switch would get so hot?

Thanks

Ian

Hello All

Thanks so much for all the help. I took the VR off and cleaned everything. It's starts right away and runs great! The -30 volts is gone, the only thing the kind of concerns me is while running the ammeter is reading 0 or maybe +1 volts. Shouldn't it be reading much higher to charge the battery?

Again thanks for the all the help.

" ammeter is reading 0 or maybe +1 volts. " Most ammeters don't read volts. They read amps. The ammeter will show a higher charge if your battery is low at start up, then drop to 1-3 amps running. Just insure your connections at the battery and block are clean and tight. Turn the lights on and see what the ammeter does while the tractor is running.
