Rebuilt the 8n somewhat, put new rings in it, bearings looked very good, lapped the valves and cleaned ports , put head on and have good compression in number 1 only, other 3 goes up to about 60 and right back down to nothing?Any ideas??

The schrader valve in the compression gauge has gone bad after testing #1 cylinder. The schrader valve is not the same one as in a tire,as the spring is weaker,so one for a tire or tube won't work right.

Another poster a few months ago had similar results and reported the cam timing was the culprit. Just passing it along, no direct knowledge.

Did you even remove the timing cover? If not, then it's not cam timing. You could borrow a compression tester from an auto supply store, I know Auto Zone and O' Riley's has a tool loan program. If you get the same results with another tester, and you didn't disturb the cam timing, than I would have to say the valves aren't seating. There are ways to check for that with compressed air in the spark plug holes.

Guess, starter dragging and not turning over fast enough. All is well in that dept, Purrs "like a kitten" !!Thnks for the replies
