Ford’s chief of styling, Eugene Gregorie (also responsible for the 1936 Lincoln Zephyr and 1939 Lincoln Continental), provided input for the Art Deco appearance of the 9N (possibly with additional input from Edsel Ford).

(quoted from post at 05:44:02 02/06/19) The guys on the Ford board were talking about an "Art Deco Ford."
Sean PA found this in a google search.
Interesting little read.
Hemings Motor News

Wonder who started the rumor about the engine being half of a V-8? The "L" head was in use 10 years before the tractor adopted it and Ford used it in 21 different applications. It was not half an engine.

If I remember correctly, the N Series engine was designed to share some of the machine tooling with the Mercury flathead V8 (I'm thinking they were made in the same factory?). The N engine was not a "½ V8," but leaned on an existing V8 engine design, in other words.

More info:

"They are an engine based on Flathead V8 internal parts. Pistons are the same as the 39 Ford 85 hp V8. Starter is from the V8 "60" engine. Rods are the same type as the passenger car V8, but built heavier."

Thank you for finding that. I remember one time I used half of a set of Johnson adjustable lifters that I Had for our race car, in my 9N when rebuilding the motor. Fit perfect.
