8N ignition problem

I have a 48 8n ft coil. It will not start cold, first start of the day, unless I run a jumper to the coil from a battery, then starts GREAT. It is 12v and turns over real good, not a bad battery. It still has the original white resistor in line. Tried changing the coil, it is a 12v coil. It runs good without the jumper and starts fine when warmed up.

"It still has the original white resistor in line."

The white resistor is not original. Remove it and you will be fine. Should use the ballast resistor that is located on the engine side of the
dash.

Yes, as HC said -12V front coil -NO external 1-OHM ceramic resistor. However, I suspect that is not your problem. Is the battery good? It must sustain a full charge under load, NOT simply slapping a charger on it. Get a starter shop to bench test it, replace if junk with a GOOD brand. Secondly, verify the wiring is all CORRECT. Your comment "...still has the original white resistor..." tells me you don't really know what was original. Just because it came with it when YOU bought it does not mean it is an original part. Get the essential manuals if you want to do the work yourself. Answer these questions: Are the OEM generator and voltage regulator removed from the circuit? OEM Ballast Resistor in place? 12V alternator now? Starter with 3-wire solenoid? OEM-type Ignition switch? When was the last distributor tuneup? Any lights in the system? verify wiring, and doesn't mean looking at colors -do continuity test. Disconnect lights to eliminate a possible short - can reconnect later when the true root cause is revealed.

The battery is very good cranks the starter fine, has been checked out by local batt shop. The tractor has a 1 wire alt that charges good. The resistor that I mentioned is a white one on the back side of the dash. New lights that I wired with a new switch and fused, work fine.

tom, it doesn't matter where that white resistor is mounted, it should not be used with a 12 volt coil. the only function it has in your setup is to make your tractor hard to start.

u should have the OEM ballast resistor in the circuit, but not a white ceramic one. this is the only one u should have:

Only use the resistor that HFJ posted a picture of. It starts out cold with low resistance to give more current to the coil, then as it gets hot it increases resistance to lower the current and protect the coil. Take off the white ceramic one and give it to somebody you don't like.

(quoted from post at 14:09:56 02/06/19) Thanks guys, Just ordered one up. Sounds like that is the problem.

you're welcome. happy to help :)

Take off the white ceramic one and give it to somebody you don't like.
