Carb rebuild

How do you know when it is time to rebuild a carb on an 8N, mine starts up good, no matter what temp, no matter how many days it has been sitting, about 2 cranks and fires right up, believe it is running rich, after starting, you or the tractor better be out of the garage in less than 10 secs, not the smoke but the fumes, real bad. Just want to get some opinions.

OEM Marvel Schebler, eBay clone Marvel, or an aftermarket Zenith?

It does have a main jet adjustment screw on it. Try that.

If ain?t broke don?t fix it. All my N? smell like they run rich while in the barn. How do the plugs look, are they sooted up or nice and tan looking. Like Bruce said you can lean it out some but if it were me I wouldn?t mess with it too much.

If it isn't broke....All these old machines are stinky. So were cars 60 years ago.
