Jus completed 12v conversion changed 6v round can coil to 12v round can. Turned engine over and am getting very weak spark . With the conversion kit was a new resistor which I hooked up the way it should be and junked the old ballast resistor. Could it be that the new 12v round coil has a internal resistor in it so I have too much resistance now which is causing weak spark?

You should only use the original resister. How many volts do you have at the coil? Are all the electrical connections clean and tight?

The only time you need a resistor with a round coil on these tractors is when you use a 6v round coil on 12v. You haven't done that. You said that you are using a 12v round coil. So get rid of the resistor.

BTW, no automotive coil has an ?internal resistor?. Internal coil resistance is determined by wire gauge and the number of turns. Higher resistance is provided by smaller gauge wire with greater turns. If the coil is marked or sold with a notice ?requires an external resistor? that simply means it has a low internal resistance and will be damaged by excessive voltage. It does not mean the coil has an internal resistor. Your 12v coil will have 3 ohms or more internal resistance.

"...With the conversion kit was a new resistor which I hooked up the way it should be and junked the old ballast resistor..." HUH? The angle (side) mount distributor does not use the earlier OEM ballast resistor that was used on the front mount with the square can coil. Is this what you have? The round can 6V coil has a resistor built in. They probably included a ceramic 1-OHM resistor in the kit which isn't needed if a 12V coil is used -see picture. 12V conversion means the OEM generator and voltage regulator are or should be removed from the circuit and an alternator installed. Is this what you have? Some things are not making sense here...

Since you mention 6 volt round can coil I assume this is a side mount and not a front mount distributor.

There are two types of ?12 volt? coils. One is marked ?12 volts -external resistor required?. It has about 1 1/2 ohms primary resistance (same as a 6 volt coil). It can run directly on a 6 volt system or with an added 1 1/2 ohm resistor between switch and coil input on a 12 volt system.

The other coil is marked ?12 volts -no external resistor required?. This has about 3 ohms primary resistance and will operate in a 12 volt system with no added resistance. It will not work in 6 volt system.

I see two possibilities for your your weak spark. (1) Using an added resistor with direct 12 volt 3 ohm coil.

(2) ?With the conversion kit was a new resistor?. Those kit resistors should be about 1 1/2 ohms. I have seen several instances of the resistors in conversion kits being way too high in value. My 51 8N side mount came with a conversion kit and hard start problem. It had a new direct 12 volt coil but also had resistor installed. To add complications that resistor measured nearly 6 ohms. Removed resistor and all was well.

If you have ?12 volt no resistor required? coil remove any resistors between coil and switch

If you have a ?12 volt external resistor required? coil, check that the resistor from the kit is not significantly greater than 1 1/2 ohms.

Removed the resistor checked all connections were tight and the ole girl fired right up and ran so damn smooth and it was 10 degres this morning. This is my first tractor and it?s a 52. What a learning experience! It?s been a fun experience getting it back running after learning how to get transmission out of being stuck in 2 gears a stuck clutch and learning how to split tractor and replace clutch, and re doing all the wiring and converting to 12v and learning about point and timing. Sir could you educate me on my first 8n tractor please. could you tell me what the differance between a side mount distributor and a front mount distributor is? mine is on the right side in the front. Please!!

a sidemount has 5 wires coming out of the cap - 4 plug wires, and a center coil wire.

a frontmount has 4 wires coming out of the cap - no coil wire.
