Starting problems

Good morning, cold here in Michigan. 1951 8n with key turned on, starter button pushed down and jumped from second battery using positive ground and touching negative side of started coil relay will fire breifly. choke held open. But will stop when negative pulled away from starter. 6 volt battery shows 6.9 at terminals, same at starter button and ignition key when circuit open. Not sure what to check next, besides putting on another pair of wool socks.

At 6.9 volts, what you are seeing is a "surface" charge on the battery or a faulty meter. A fully charged battery will read 6.35 volts. So no telling what your real battery charge might be.

I don't understand the term " coil relay" or how you are jumping the tractor. What is a "coil relay"?

See tip # 43 to safely jump it.

Bruce. Negative side of the Starter Solenoid Relay. Engine fires, would not continue to run. Have not pulled any parts off to check continuity. Waiting for my eyelids to thaw out. Jumped with 12v positive to frame, negative to solenoid. Not to the 6v battery terminals.

Clean and tighten the battery terminals and the other end of the cables. It takes little current to measure volts with a volt meter, but more to run the ignition system and a lot more for the starter. The clue is that the tractor shuts down when you remove the jumper cable.

had u just finished charging the battery before u took that 6.9 volt reading? if so, a Fluke wouldn't have helped u, that extra/superficial voltage is actually in the battery, and just takes time or use to dissipate.

no, plowed snow for an hour night before, turned key and gas off. wouldn't not turn over in the morning. (still snowing here) there is no click when key is turned on and starter button is pushed. afterwards, when I touched the one test lead to the starter button terminal, the other to frame, the solenoid relay clicked.

Excellent, I'll try that tonight when I get home from work. I think Jerry Jeff Walker said we should hang the guy who invented work. Thanks to all that replied.

in that case, i'd guess faulty meter or weak 8 volt battery ;)

i've never seen a surface charge last overnight

One more question, there is a small plate that is loose on the brake linkage that enters at the hub on one wheel. Thus, the linkage moves up and down a little instead of just spinning to engage the brake. That side doesn't brake evenly with the other side. I was going to wire weld (harbor freight coupon again) it back in place. Anything I need to keep in mind before I tackle that project?
