Ignition switch

Can I replace the keyed ignition switch on my '45 2N with a simple push\pull switch? Is there something mystical about ignition switches?

Thanks

Zeke

Sure you can as long as it's Amp rating is enough to power the ignition system and the lights (if present, if wired through the ignition switch).

That being said, I'm in favor of keeping the keyed ignition switch.

Ford was WAY ahead of their time using a keyed switch and a neutral-start safety starter switch on tractors.

Even if you think the tractor is stored in a secure location you never know when a dummy or a kid might find it and mess around, possibly hurting or killing themselves.

I forgot to mention that I bought a "heavy duty" (75 amp rated) pushpull switch but when I wired it in, the tractor would start whether the switch was "on" or "off". I ohm'd the switch and all is std.

Thanks Bob, that is a valid observation. On my ranch there are easier ways to kill yourself than an old tractor :)

My 8N came into my owner ship with a push-pull switch. Bu looking at the knob of the switch, I would guess that it's age is measured in decades.

It does pose a safety risk, especially for young children. Supervised play only.

i like the key because once it's parked, it's easy to tell at a glance if it's not there, and the ignition is therefore off. my eyes don't pick up the position of the key from a distance, but i can tell key and fob visible from key and fob absent.

If I ever take the key, I would never find it again!

i'm not there yet, i don't think. but then again... wait - what were we talking about?

What type of switch is the 75A that you bought? The factory ignition switch is a single pole/single throw, is that what you bought? You either bought the wrong type of switch or you wired it incorrectly if it's starting regardless of switch position.

A new keyed ignition switch is only $8.48 https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/Ford-2N_Key-Switch_8N3679C.html

Those OEM aftermarket style switches will bite you they are garbage...

Napa KS6041 life will be good...

Thanks for the tip. The key switch on my 9N had been replaced with one of those OEM style switches when I got it so chances are it will fail soon. I had to replace the voltage cutout today, it lasted less than a year. Good old made in Taiwan.

"the tractor would start whether the switch was "on" or "off""

Do you mean the engine would actually start or the starter would
spin it over? The starter should spin it over, key on or key off.
But it should only start with the key on.

Hummm.........after a dozen posts/responses, we find the classic "failure to communicate". [/b]

"The starter would crank. No response from the engine. Thanks"

That would be normal. They do that with the key switch too.
